We have been frustrated with pencil crayons with easy-to-break lead from other brands for a long time. (We tried 3-4 brands including Amazon Basic.) We finally found decent one whose lead doesn't break after sharpening. It feels a bit firmer than the other brands that we previously bought but our kids are enjoying the frustration-free, smooth touch of these Staedtler pencil crayons. We will stick to this brand.

These coloured pencils from Staedtler are part of their Design Journey product line. They are high quality artist products that are reasonably priced- not too cheap, but also not outrageously expensive. These pencils are available in various sets ranging from 12 to their full range of 72, in tins or in cardboard boxes. The tinned sets are a lot more expensive but do provide superior storage for the pencils. The performance of the pencils are good. They are not creamy, and for those wanting a soft set of pencils like the Prismacolor, these are not for you. These are much harder, closer to the Verithins but superior in their blending, and lay down their colour smooth and dry. The colours are pretty rich with good saturation. The more I used them, the more I liked them, and their layering capabilities impressed me as I was able to apply multiple layers with no issues.I compared these to other coloured pencils offered by Staedtler and as expected, these are superior to their cheaper pencils such as the Noris Club, Noris Colour, and the Staedtler Triangular. These are similar in quality to their Ergosoft but a side by side comparison does reveal these to be a bit more pigmented while the Ergosoft's are a bit softer. Both offer excellent durability. The colour cores of these pencils are outstanding as they sharpen beautifully with no colour core breakage issues, and they retain a sharp point. The pencils are thin, hexagonal, lacquered, and branded with their colour numbers.I was impressed with the performance of these pencils. I did not expect to like them as much straight out of the box since they were a harder pencil. But the more I used them, the more they grew on me, and I was able to implement all the techniques I use when working with the most expensive pencils. The colour saturation and coverage is good as is the layering capabilities. The leads are strong and their sets offer a good range of colour. There is no lightfast information available so I would classify these as a good quality, scholastic grade brand of coloured pencils that are perfect for colouring and colourists. I will use these with no hesitation on my sketches as they offer a good, solid performance.

I originally bought the 72 set of these pencils last year. Over time the most used colours have become smaller so this was a good way to ensure I have back-ups. I have purchased several other sets of different pencils since I began colouring but I always get drawn back to these. Lovely range of colours, no breakage problems and good value for money.
