The Indra 36 pastel colored pencils are a lovely set. Do not be confused, these are colored pencils, not chalk pastels. Each color is different, no repeats. They sharpen well. They don’t blend well. The Oder is pretty bad. I’ve left them out to air hoping it will go away. It actually causes a headache. There’s no color name or number on them. I wouldn’t buy these again or gift them due to the smell.

On the expensive side for amount of pencils in the set. But it’s got good colours, so a good trade-off…

UPDATE:I am still loving these pencils, and even more so now that they have the two new sets of square oil based pencils. I look forward to Indra producing a full 120 or larger set of standard colors - I'll buy them for certain!I must note here though that despite what others may have said, not all of the pencils across the three sets are unique. There is some duplication, though you can't really prove it beyond the colors matching, since the original set had no color numbers. But there are some duplicates, mostly in the lighter shades. This is not a problem in my opinion since I use lighter shades for burnishing in many cases and will burn through them faster. It is also worth noting that if you have the other 120 set of square oil based pencils that are made by Brutfuner, adding these three sets from Indra really rounds out the color selection to be complete with all colors, shades, tones and tints you would ever need covered between the two manufacturers. The pencils both perform similarly and can be used together.ORIGINAL REVIEW:I am seriously impressed with these pencils. In fact, I can find no drawbacks to them beyond the usual questionable lightfastness of any non-professional brand. But I don't count that as a negative as I won't use them for professional works. To the manufacturer: Please produce a full large set of square barreled, black wood pencils of this same quality. I will buy them immediately! The MANY Pros:>>Colors are smooth, can be layered well, blend well with various blending mediums.>>Every color is unique, none are duplicates.>>Square pencil shape is my favorite of all pencil shapes, it just feels good in the hand.>>Very minimal dusting/crumbling, even at higher pressure application.>>Sharpen perfectly, no breakage.>>Leads are all centered (this was one thing I was worried about before ordering since Prismacolor are also made in Mexico and are more often off center than any other brand I have).>>Black wood cores are beautiful (I'm a sucker for black wood pencils lol).>>Beautifully presented in a highly giftable tin.Bottom line: If you love colored pencils you must have these.

I bought these mostly to color with since they are not lightfast. These pencils come in a tin and sorted by color. The pencils do not have names on them nor even numbers so I used an acrylic pen and numbered them sequentially based on how the came. While some won't buy pencils without names, it does not bother me as often names don't quite represent an actual color. The barrels of these pencils are square which is a newer trend in pencils. I sharpen these with my NB Deli crank sharpener (similar to a Derwent longpoint) without any issues. The cores of the pencils feel a bit more on the soft side and lay down quite nice and are bright. If you have a lighter hand you can get a few layers out of them, 3 tops in my case. The colors are beautiful and a great compliment to other pencils. The main thing that really stuck out for me was that unlike every other non artist pencil these are not made in China they are made in Mexico. There are very few colored pencils made in Mexico, the most notable being Prismacolor. Because these are made in Mexico it completely rules out any idea that these are Marco branded as those are made in China.Overall these are pretty decent budget type pastel colored pencils if you ignore the fact they have no name or number on them.

These pastel pencils are a treat for the eyes. They are creamy smooth and do not fatigue the hands if you layer them. I had very little crumbling when swatching. The pencils do quite well on Johanna Basford books.I do not care for the pencils not having any name or number. Either one would've been fine, but to not have a way of identifying them other than a guess is frustrating. These pencils are from a Mexican company but made in China, which is not a problem as there are some high quality pencils made in China, but I had someone try to convince me they are made in Mexico and that I had a counterfeit set, which they are not. If any future sets are planned, please number the pencils at the very least. I marked mine with a ultra fine tip Sharpie, but they are rubbing off with use.I also suggest these be shipped in something more than a plastic bag with no padding. It is a testament to the quality of the tin that they weren't completely destroyed. Not the fault of the seller, but should be addressed as it will cut down on replacing damaged goods. I hope the cores did not break from the rough handling.
