This review is based on Price Point vs. Quality vs. Performance = sub $400 Full sized (around 40 inches) Jackson Monarkh SC Red Satin Hard Tail with 2xHumbuckers. It does have a shorter Scale coming in at 24 3/4 inches with 22 frets compared to the usual 25 1/2 inch 24 frets I have on my other guitars. The neck has the Jackson compound radius which is nice for this size. The tone is something I am still working on, as covered in the CONS section below.PROS: Beautiful finish. The body shape and smoothness is great. Neck and Fretboard are smooth and straight. Headstock is nice with standard sealed Tuners that have good response. It is light and well balanced. Single Volume and Tone controls are smooth and have good range of adjustment. The 3 way switch is nice and also has good response. Adjustable bridge and saddles, which will get tested shortly with a proper set up.CONS: The packaging needs more care. I am lucky this guitar did not arrive damaged as it was loose in the box and what thin foam there was had shifted. The guitar was in a foam bag with paper covering the fretboard and the usual plastic film over the plastics and pick-ups. The next few items are not really that bad, just surprising given what I am accustomed to on Jacksons, even economy lines: The frets will need dressing. They have very sharp ends that are protruding on both sides of the neck. While the neck is smooth and feels great, the fret ends catch my hand and fingers. I know this guitar was shipped from the Northeast during the coldest part of the year, so some fretboard shrinkage could account for the frets sticking out. (wood shrinks when its cold and dry) It is now here in the deep south getting acclimated to the humidity, so I will dress the the frets once it has been sitting a bit. It was far from in tune on arrival. Once a cursory tuning was done, there is fret buzz and intonation items to address. The action is VERY low, which I like low action on Jacksons, but this is another adjustment needing to be made.Overall, I am happy with this guitar and will update this review with pictures and final thoughts once it has had a proper set up.So far it is certainly worth the price and since I actually enjoy setting up and adjusting guitars for the perfect tones, I have high hopes for this one.UPDATE AS OF 4-22-2022: Well, this axe has had quite some time to acclimate to the deep south US humidity. It did adjust the frets a bit due to the wood expansion on the neck and fret board but the fret tangs still needed to be sanded. (Higher priced guitars usually have the extra step of having the tang snipped short of the fret board edge before installation) When addressing the frets and intonation, I found that the string alignment from bridge to nut was way off, The neck was "tweaked" a bit out of alignment causing the High E string to roll off of the neck. Fortunately, its a bolt on neck and I could massage the alignment in the neck socket.Bottom line: It has great tone and is a good buy for a second guitar if you enjoy and understand set up. It is what is considered "second quality" and therefore explains what a great price point it has. if you are as picky as I am, buy direct from the supplier. Great Guitar, no real regrets.
