Amazing little Flash Bang! I use it for some quick extra light when needed. Street and Event. But take some batteries with you.

This Godox branded flash and a set of well written instructions arrive in a small, but nicely made cardboard box with the flash presented inside a protective plastic bag and bright orange cardboard insert that kept it secure and safe.I’m not someone who typically shoots in low light situations or needs a speedlite in my typical photography applications. Though I have been caught out a few times in situations where it would’ve been nice to have a flash better than my pop-up one but I didn’t want to sacrifice the bag space or weight for my 580EX II. Which is a niche that this unit fulfils nicely, as you can pocket it or tuck it away into almost any space in a camera bag or backpack. This thing is very tiny, lightweight and affordable in addition to being one of the more powerful compact flashes in this price category. They’ve been able to cut costs by not including all the bells and whistles and making it an AAA powered unit but again, despite the cheaper price and lightweight build it’s solidly made and it has still got most of the features I’d need or want day to day. It fits very securely in the hot & cold shoe mounts of all of my cameras without a complaint and it runs off a sync cable just fine.I actually appreciate the use of AAA batteries for the flash, sure, flashes with a built-in lithium battery can recycle marginally faster but if you’re doing a lot of shots and forget to charge a flash with a built-in battery you’re just done for the day. With this you just pop open the battery door, throw a new pair of AAA batteries in and you’ve got another 200–600 shots depending on your power settings. This type of flash is in its element when paired with smaller modern cameras that don’t necessarily have a built-in flash, though honestly, even if you do have a pop-up or fixed flash I'd still consider one of these. It’s just flat out better than most built-in flashes and I personally rate this higher than practically every built-in flash I've experienced, except for the lack of TTL. The optical sensor on this is a nice touch though and it works great in combination with built-in flashes, so you get a little fancier with the lighting composition if you’d like. The sensor triggers reliably from several meters away and it’s a quick and easy way to add some extra fill light from the side or potentially bounced off a ceiling. The main thing to keep in mind with this is that it’s a manual flash and you’re going to have to learn which settings go together, which may or may not be a dealbreaker for you. The instructions do have a couple charts to alleviate the guessing somewhat, but I get that not everyone is comfortable with manual flashes and would prefer to just shoot and let the camera figure it out. Manual vs TTL is one of those commonly debated things but the fact is if you’re not comfortable reading/memorising the charts and dialling in the power by taking test shots to check things this flash may not be for you. If you can’t live without TTL Godox has a substantial range of third party flashes and they’ll almost certainly have something that suits your needs in their range.Ultimately, if you’re someone who doesn’t mind manual flashes and you’re looking for a compact, well-built and affordable flash, I'm not sure that you can find a better flash than this IM30 from Godox at the time of writing in this price range. The current price of £32 is hard to fault for what you’re getting, and to get something notably better you'd be talking about a 2–4 times jump in cost over this.
