not for flat bottom grooves – weird tip geometryYou must be careful reading these reviews because they are about different router bit shapes. So you cannot trust the Star Rating system statistics.I am reviewing the so called ¼” Compression bit. The description stated that the cutting diameter was ¼” and the cutting length was 1 inch. Well that is not correct. The bit I received has a really weird tip geometry and cuts funny looking grooves with a narrower bottom. I was not a careful enough shopper and I did not notice the website photograph showing the weird profile. I had hoped to use this bit for making parallel sides flat bottom box joint finger joints, but this bit will not work for that. I am going to ask some of my woodworking buddies about the use of this weird tip bit. I have to give this bit the full 5 star rating because it is exactly as described and I was the one who made a mistake.

This up & down cut compression spiral router bit using 1/4" Shank from XDENGP is a high quality sharp and well made router bit that provides clean and super smooth cuts every time i use it. i used it for different types of wood, the bit feature a NACO coating that i think should be used on any bit made today to keep the bit from overheating, and overall to last longer. im very impressed with this bit's performance and recommended it.

When I first got my CNC router, I got mostly upcut end mills (and a few V-bits). I had the idea that upcut bits were "better" than others - kind of a general purpose bit. But as I started to get into working with them I realized that some materials don't handle the cutting action of them as well as others. Especially certain plywoods really experience a lot of tearout with upcut bits. Of course, they are great for materials that aren't that susceptible to tearout, but otherwise downcut bits work better in some cases, as well as Compression bits like this one from Xdengp. The compression bits have the upcut flutes at the tip, but then transition to a downcut configuration. This gives a kind of "best of" scenario where the bottom of the cut is clean and smooth, without sacrificing a smooth edge on the top of the material. Chip ejection tends to happen sideways, and it's probably better to keep the feed speed slower than what would be used for an upcut bit. This isn't the first Xdengp bit I've acquired, so I trust their quality from past experience, although I haven't yet used this particular bit yet. One thing I like about them is they include a sheet with bit specification including suggested speeds and feeds, which is a handy reference to have. Plus like most of my bits they are solid carbide with a low-friction coating to help the already long-life carbide sharp even longer, and to keep the bits cooler and smoother-running. These are nice-quality bits at a fair price.

I have a desktop CNC machine that uses a trim router as a spindle. So far I am really pleased with this bit. I appreciate that they included a speed and feed guide to get started. I tend to run my feed a little slower since I only use it for fun and the machine is not the strongest. I don't have any complaints here. It is working as I expected it to. It seems well made for anything I am going to use it for. Most of the material I am cutting is box store hardwood so keeping that in mind I would say the bit does a fantastic job as the quality of box store wood is usually pretty sketchy. I think the bit is a good value for the price.

First let me say that I bought this 1/4th inch from Xdengp and a 1/8 inch bit from fivepears on the same day. They came in the EXACT same packaging!!!! Just a heads up, I am guessing that most of these cheaper bits are probably made in the same factory somewhere and then shipped out under different company names. That doesn't affect the quality of the bit, just thought it was interesting. The bit works great! Leaves a beautiful smooth top surface and did not have a blowout at the bottom of the cut which happens some times with these downcuts. I will be buying more of these.I have only used for roughly 30 minutes, so I cannot say how long it will last yet.
