For ages I have been used to zoom lenses so this 85mm f1.8 is a departure for me. I like the challenge though of adapting my thinking to, "what can this add to my mix of shots?" and that is just a matter of time playing with it.It seems well constructed. I take care of my shooting situations so the lack of a weather seal is a non-issue for me. The aperture ring has more than enough rotation to finely dial it in to specific stops even though there is no feel of clicks as feedback. I watch the status information in the viewfinder to see the f-stops roll by. Unless I am missing something, my Sony a7iii does not communicate changing f-stops with this lens.Similarly the wide focus ring has a lot of rotational travel for manual focus. For product photography on a table I do a lot of focus stacking with magnification and colour peaking turned on; plus I monitor captures while tethered to a 32" monitor, so that long travel makes it easier to fine tune my focus. The auto focus so far is not up to my expectations for a few different reasons. It is slower than my 3 zoom lenses (17-28mm / 28-70mm / 70-300mm) and it sure seems to do a lot of hunting short and long of the intended subject under the same conditions.Secondly the noise from the motor, at least on my unit, is picked up in audio, both recorded with the internal camera microphone and with external small shotgun mics on the hotshoe. There is no getting around it and it is not a pleasant hum; it is scratchy and erratic. That takes this lens out of the running for my videos unless I am not needing the audio, or if the video composition is worth choosing this 85mm lens for any reason, I will capture audio on a separate digital recorder and sync it later. The image quality comparisons I have dreamt up so far put the clarity and sharpness of this lens equal to my other after market lenses. What sets this apart is the 1.8 aperture. Normally I like a well defined images of my typical subject matter through the entire depth but I can see where this lens can consistently separate the foreground subject from cluttered objects in the background without needing me to play with that in software.Physically it is again a good match with my other lenses, because of its similar weight and dimensions. The dust caps on both ends work reliably. No accidental falling off. Every filter I have mounted so far threads smoothly and they don't interfere with removal or attachment of the lens hood.I am looking forward to see what if any improvements 7Artisans might deliver that can be made with the built in USB-C port on the inside rim of the lens.
