This is a great little gas leak detector that tests for Natural Gas, Methane(sewer gas), and Propane. I use and tested various devices, including my natural gas water heater and furnace, as well as my propane BBQ grill and garage portable heater. I was mostly concerned that the propane garage heater wasn't leaking since I use it in a confined space. It is indoor rated and has sensors that should shut it off if something goes wrong, but it's my life and having this detector works with so many other things as well. I didn't test for sewer leaks, but I guess I will after this review. No leaks were detected on my heater, furnace or hot water heater. If you are not sure if your leak detector is working properly, you should be able to use a lighter or your BBQ grill (without lighting it) to quickly verify it works properly. One reviewer used a butane lighter and said that it worked. I used my propane BBQ grill outside. It does take a few seconds to register, but if you had a constant leak a few seconds probably isn't your biggest concern. The important thing is to identify the leak and fix it. The device itself is nice and seems to be good quality. It comes with batteries and a storage case. Like other reviewers, I found the case to be a little small, but it does work. I would recommend this leak detector, just to have around the house if you use natural gas or propane. Sewer gas can also be harmful, but I think you'd be able to identify that without a leak detector (haha).

This is a very nice gas detector. It comes in a good quality case with everything needed to get going. It includes a little Philips head screwdriver to remove the cover for the battery compartment (the screw stays in the cover so it won't get lost - nice touch), along with the required 3-AA batteries (Duracell).Once I installed the batteries and reinstalled the cover, a quick push on the power button turned it on and started the warmup, which takes 30 seconds. Once the warmup had completed, I went around and checked several areas in my house for different types of gases. I have natural gas in my house, so I checked all the plumbing and connections running to my furnace and water heater. Then I checked for sewer gas at my drains and sumps. Everything was clear.I wanted to make sure it was functioning OK, so I took a butane lighter (without lighting) and triggered the gas to release. It took roughly 2-3 seconds for the detector to register the gas, but once it did it went straight into the red and beeped repeatedly.I never had a gas detector before, and I was originally going to drop it one star due to slow response, but I did some research and it seems a delay is quite normal. In fact, the delay on this unit was fast, compared to other detectors a read about online. That leaves me with the one negative I have with the unit, and it's minor. The case is just a little bit too small to easily fit the detector back in without bending the sensor tube a little more tightly than I would prefer. It fits, but just barely. That said, I would recommend purchasing this gas detector to family and friends. It's simple to use, comes with everything needed to get it up and running, includes a nice case and seems well made.

I checked all my gas connectors and feel safer now since no alert was produced.I did test it first by turning on my gas stove and putting the sensor near it (w/o the flame going) and it alerted. As others have said, it takes 10-15 seconds for the alert to sound so be patient.

We remodeled a house. One of the things we did is to move things around in the kitchen to move a door. That included a gas stove. That's not the safest thing to do. So a gas detector is helpful for just such a move. Then after the new stove it needs to be tested again for leaks. We have a camping trailer that uses propane so it's nice to have a portable device to also check that before we go to bed and the heater will be running all night. One of our beds for the kids is right next to where the furnace blows out so I want to be sure the coast is clear so we can all sleep securely.I appreciate that this can detect more than one type of gas. It makes it so much more useful.Useful item
