Function: Our space is 1200 square feet, and we have this in our great room with high ceilings. Our previous humidifier was rated for 500 square feet, and barely kept our apartment at 27% humidity at 68 F. It also took 24 - 48 hours to raise the humidity a percentage or two. This one raised the humidity from 10% in about 8 hours, it's kept the humidity about 30 - 32% since, in the middle of winter with our heater running full blast. Many places recommend 40 - 50% humidity, but I notice a real difference around 30%. 5/5Water Refill: My unit is on a floor that isn't even, so one tank empties first. The tanks are 1 gallon each, and easy to pick up with a handle. I refill them in the bathtub. 5/5Cleaning: One thing I love is this unit is designed to be cleaned. The lid to the tanks is the entire bottom of the tank, which means the inside of the tanks are easy to reach and scrub out. The top of the unit with the fan lifts up out of the base, which makes cleaning the base easier (and everything is accessible to your scrub brush). 5/5I have read that wick-based humidifiers raise the humidity faster when the air is dryer, and slower when the air is already humid. This seems in line with my experience, and I don't really think it's too bad if it keeps things from getting too humid.Sound: This unit uses a fan to pull air in through a wick, which humidifies the room. The sound is similar to a box fan, which is a sound I find relaxing. There are also some "glug" sounds when air enters the tank. No points off for sound, but it's not silent, it might be better in a hallway outside your bedroom if you're sensitive to sound but want it nearby.Longevity: We've had the unit for over a month now, so no score here yet.Overall - I like the design, it looks nice, functions well, and was reasonably prices - so a win-win for us.

I used a heated supersonic humidifier last winter, and although it was decent at keeping the air moist, I had white dust absolutely caked everywhere. It was inside my computer case, all over my furniture, even inside drawers and cabinets! It was hard to clean, plus I'm sure breathing it in all the time can't be good either. Buying filtered water or installing a filter on my tap weren't very feasible (cost, plus I live in a condo so there's not a lot of room either for storage of bottles upon bottles of water or a filtering machine), so I decided to try an evaporative humidifier this year. After (almost) a complete winter using this one, I'm pretty disappointed with it. I will say that I didn't notice any white dust, but the air stays pretty dry if the weather is cold and clear. Without the humidifier I sit at about 15% in my ~600 sqft condo, and with it running continuously on medium, I can get to 20%. I go through the two tanks in about 24 hours. Sometimes it struggles to reach even 20%, if the heat turns one more regularly. The noise is also not great...I can't keep it on high because it's just too loud when I'm sitting about 3m away from it (my humidity measurements are also taken about 3m away).I add in bacteriostatic and use cleaning cartridges to try and limit the build up on the filters, and I also flip my filters every couple of days. I don't notice any mould or growth, but the filters still get crusty and stop working as well. I change them every month, which adds up alongside the other stuff I use. Plus, the filters from the company itself is hard to find in Canada, and it's not even in stock on Amazon all the time. I tried a third party filter and it didn't work as well as the set that originally came in the machine. Carrying and filling the tanks is pretty easy, though opening them is a little difficult--there's not a good way to grip the tank when it's upside down, plus the cover itself doesn't have very comfortable grips.I deep clean the machine every two weeks by scrubbing the tanks and bottom tray with dish soap, and wiping down the top and sides inside and out. I like that it's easy to reach everything for cleaning, at least, though the wire is connected to the side so I can't immerse it in water to scrub the grill. The auto shut off works well, so I don't worry about it wasting electricity when I'm doing a weekend trip.Overall, I don't think this humidifier is worth the price since it doesn't work well enough for my needs. It's better than nothing, and it's still preferable to the white dust my supersonic humidifier was putting out, but disappointing.

I have a really nice Vornado fan, so I thought this humidifier would be great too, but it could barely humidify my sub-1000sq ft space, despite the stated specifications. And it was noisy too.The refund took two months. I think that's unacceptable. When I return stuff to a brick & mortar retail, I get refunded immediately, and I can use that money - my money - to buy what I really need.I could understand if it took a couple of days or even a week for an online store, but two months to refund money is unacceptable. It's like you're forcing me to loan you money and I think that's pathetic.

Pros: Works great holds a steady humidity, tempted to get another one for another room.Cons: I keep it in my bedroom though and I am hyper sensitive to light making it harder for me to sleep as I cannot find a way to turn off the lights that emanate from the sides where the water jugs go in. also when the the jugs are more than 80%% full I would say; they start to do the "low water" flash which is annoying because I would not consider anything above "40%" full "low on water". easy work around I found is re-seating the Water jugs but that only temporarily stops it from flashing.*I came back to lower the rating. I cant sleep. its so annoying how bright is flashes. I always top off the water before bed in both of the jugs and it just keeps flashing. it does not care what-so-ever how much water is in the jugs, it will flash. you can re-seat to prevent it from flashing for maybe 5 mins, try and fall asleep in that time.*also FYI the water does not equally lower, one jug lowers before the other, making me think that this low water light is related to this flaw as it probably is measuring water level in both and if one is lower than the other the "total" amount of water is "low"*Tomorrow I'm going to prepare for a dissection of this machine and see if I can just cut the wires to the light, or figure out how to fix this defect. it must be a defect because no business in their right mind would pass and sell this with this bright of a flashing light that goes off at 90% full.*as I'm writing this its menacingly flashing at me, taunting me. "re-seat me dumb ape" I can imagine hearing it whispering in the corner with every bright flash in my dark room

The EVDC500 is a cool wick evaporative unit, so it doesn't leave the white mineral residue "cool mist" units do. Since it doesn't heat water to generate steam, it's more energy efficient and the humidity is more natural. The unit works well and maintains precise humidity levels between 40% and 60% - normal household range - adjustable in 5% increments. It's well made and intelligently designed. Here are the pros and cons...Pros: modular design, easy to take apart and clean; simple settings, easy to use, set and forget; DC motor is energy efficient, quiet "eco" setting. Fast, friendly, customer service.Cons: fan is noisy on high setting; evaporator wicks need seasonal replacement; tanks are made of fragile hard plastic, must be removed for filling, will break if dropped. One of the tanks on my unit arrived with a crack - not a result of shipping. Customer service FedExed a replacement which I received the next day, no questions asked. Now that's what I call reliable customer service,Update: The unit works perfectly after several months of 24/7 use (humidifying my guitar room). No problems at all, so I've upgraded this review from 4 to a well deserved 5 stars.
