Back in 2003, a fellow metal sculptor let me use his craftsman 48oz ball peen hammer to texture some 1/4” steel plates. I was amazed. He was pretty careful with its use, and I had to grovel to borrow it.More than 20 years later, and after many short attempts to see if Craftsman would reintroduce the hammer, I finally spent a couple hours in the web, searching for something comparable.I was surprised and delighted to discover that the same hammer (same manufacturer) was being sold by Vaughan, and for an amazing price. This is the fulfillment of a 20 year micro-dream. It hits and textures just like I remember, and it’s almost surreal to have it actually perform like I remembered, because really, what measures up to a 20 year memory nowadays?I’m thrilled.The picture is the 48 oz hammer on my 400 lb anvil: 37” by 5” — It’s a big hammer, with notable rebound; great for texturing cold or hot steel.Jacob Dean
