I love this small statue which is modeled after the famous French Revolutionary painter, David. Yes, Napoleon crossed the Alps through the St. Bernard pass on the back of a donkey. Napoleon was a shameless propagandist who made a mockery of the Republican ideas of the French Revolution. However, we have to remember the chaos and terror that was the result of the early French Republic, and the French people just wanted some peace & stability that a dictator like Napoleon offered. We must remember royalists in France and foreign monarchists (Prussians, Russians, Austrians, Swedes, Piedmonts, British, ...) attacked revolutionary France to end government of, by, and for the people. At the very least France was able to fight off and impose the ideas of democratic republicanism on Europe. Even though France (not just Napoleon) was defeated by 1814 and certainly by 1815, Europe was forever changed and in 1848 Europe exploded into revolution. The ideas of the French Revolution won because it made sense to most people.
