Considering the price this lens is a must have. The image is perfectly soft and the color shifting is nostalgic. The focus is only manual, but given the perfect softness, focusing is very easy!

I really wanted to love this lens. I have always been a fan of compact lenses, and sometimes become saddened by how large modern lenses are. I also love the tactile feel of old manual focus lenses, and the intentionality that comes with taking photos when I use them. Given this, the TTartisan 50 mm f2.0 is, at least in theory, the ideal package for both, and at least in terms of size and build quality, it is wonderful. The colors straight out of camera are muted, it does have a strong vignette and the flare is...unique, but none of these are dealbreakers - that's just a lens being a lens. But there are two specific issues I ran into while using this that became dealbreakers for me: first, as mentioned by - I think it was the Phoblographer? - this lens is surprisingly hard to obtain critical focus with, even with aids such as manual focus magnification assist or focus peaking. For reference, I have used many manual focus lenses with my Sony a7CR, including Nikon zoom lenses, as well as competitor 7artisan lenses and currently have adapted an Olympus Zuiko f1.8 lens to it. In all cases, it was very easy using the aids to get an accurately focused shot. But with the TTartisan lens, even when it *seemed* the shot was in focus, I would look back on it later only to find that it was out of focus. This was notable particularly because the other lenses I have used have shallower depths of field due to brighter apertures (f1.8, f1.4) and I do not run into such issues. The other issue is that even when I was able to get critical focus, it was much harder work given how slowly the barrel turns. It is probably the slowest manual focus throw I have ever used, and requires significant effort to move. While this may be helpful for - I don't know, still lifes, landscapes and deliberate portraits - it is exceptionally frustrating to use in street photography settings. A common response would be to just deepen the depth of field with a smaller aperture, but this would not save you if you had to move from closest focus to infinity, and again, this is not a problem I have experienced with other MF lenses, which have a much smoother, faster throw that allow you to not only achieve critical focus but follow a subject throughout a movement, as my other lenses do. Because of this, I didn't find it viable for street and everyday photography, and have since returned it.
