I love that it is double sided and easy to read. I enjoy the locking mechanism. It's very handy and has already outlasted my Stanley's which have seemed to have been less quality lately.

At last, a good tape measure with all the features I’ve been looking for without gimmicks. Mine is clearly marked (black on white with red) with Standard and Metric on both sides. The end piece is solid stainless steel. The tape auto “soft” locks by default, which is the perfect design. Depressing the thumb button activates the tape retract function. Depressing the bottom part of the same rocker button activates the “hard” lock to hold a measurement. The case feels solid even though it may not be as 3-story-drop-proof as a construction site Dewalt or Makita—but this thing is such a better design. I will have to remember to update this review after I get some time clocked on this tape. Finally, the belt hook works perfectly—neither too tight nor too loose. When in doubt, pay a bit more for a reputable Japanese brand and save money in the long run by buying a lasts-a-lifetime tool.

NOTE: --- This is an update*** to the review I wrote some time ago (below). My real issue is ergonomics not meant for me. On the belt of a rightie the tape's business end sticks forward, ready for the right hand to pull the tape measure off a belt and the blade is automatically pointed in the right direction to do some work.On my belt, at the left hip, the tape points to my rear and it requires that the tape measure be flipped around with a careful finger dance every time(!) before I can get any use out of my Tajima.Sometimes this awkward maneuver causes me to drop my Tajima. Hmpf! When I drop it from a ladder, it irritates me to no end that I have to then climb down, find where it got off to, check for damage, climb up again and try to remember what it was that I was trying to measure before the ergonomically forced ladder exercise. This is the lefty tax.Tajima is not the only manufacturer to ignore us lefties.Ideally, the already removable belt clip and escutcheon cover (on opposite sides of the tape measure) should be exchangeable. I would then be able to take both sides off, swap them and screw each part back on the other way around from the rightie version. It would only take a small redesign to the escutcheon side to implement this upgrade. [HEAR ME TAJIMA???]That way, when I pull the tape off my belt, the blade is pointed in the right direction and ready to do some measuring work.***I still almost love this tape for its accuracy, soft brake when the blade is pulled out, scale printed on the backside of the blade, and almost perfect ergonomics (for rightie). I like how it fits in my hand when measuring.Reading numbers upside down is not the core issue, as I had alluded to. However, I am fond of tapes that print the measurement numbers twice, easily readable from either side. That way, whether held in the left or right hand, one set of the numbers is always right-side-up for the user. Fewer marking errors....I almost love this tape.I am left handed and must read the tape upside down much of the time. After all these years using tools made only for righties I still make measuring errors reading tapes upside down.If only Tajima made this tape with numbers right side up for me I’d give it 5.0!

I like this series of tapes from Tajima. However, these are NOT sturdy. I know the company makes the shock resistant series - tried this out as same price. Had reverse mechanism too - stays out when pulled, returns when button depressed.Perfectly fine but looks hammered after a week on site and I can hear the springs about to fail. It’s also rather large for 16’ - was hoping for smaller unit. Will be going back to same tape in shock resistant case. Better made, same tape, smaller, same price.
