Got this unit along with a few other similarly priced options on Amazon and this one was stand-out better than the rest. I worked perfectly right out of the box and had a nice beep sound unlike some others that sounded like a grocery store scanner. Most importantly, this one scans fast for both printed barcodes and those shown on mobile phones. It's nearly instant.

Pinout on the listing does not match the product, two out of three connectors are reversed. Caused the unit to fry when I used the listing pinout.No response from the seller, Amazon directs you to their website and doesn't offer any help.Buy with caution

This device is a panel-mountable combination NFC and barcode reader that's surprisingly versatile. It can read most bar code symbologies, including most 1D symbologies, QR codes, Datamatrix, and PDF417. It was unable to read Aztec code, MaxiCode or stacked bar codes. The scanner reads large QR codes without issue - I scanned a particularly intense one from a health verification document and it worked well; it cached the data correctly while it worked its way through the slow USB HID interface. The reader reads bar codes off device screens just as well as off of paper.This reader can be switched to RS232 mode, although I didn't try that; pinouts are in the product listing in one of the photos. You can reconfigure a variety of settings, including interface mode, by scanning certain QR codes on the included manual.It also reads NFC cards. I tried a variety, including MiFare and tap-to-pay cards, and it spit out ID numbers for each. It's neat being able to read both types.I have two small complaints. The first and largest is that if you place the bar code directly on the surface, it sometimes has trouble focusing - it focuses better when the bar code is 1-3" away from the display. This could prove a bit confusing for users if embedded in a kiosk. The other is that it will read a bar code multiple times in rapid succession if it's still present, providing a cacophony of beeps; I wish it would hold back and only retrigger if a barcode is removed and re-presented.This is a nice barcode module for the price and should be a problem solver for a lot of scenarios.

This is a neat device, combining a 1D/2D barcode / qr code scanner with an NFC reader. I had no problems scanning random barcodes and qr codes, and had no problem reading the various NFC chips I have lying around. The barcode/qr code scanning is noticeably slower than with any of my gun-style scanners, but is fast enough.Note that the USB cable is terminated with a JST-type (4p) connector ... that's what the scanner expects. It has a couple of additional, larger (6p)JST connector slots in the housing/on the PCB, but I am not sure what they are for; the instructions are a bit less than minimal. They do, however, mention an RS232 mode, which will be extremely convenient for interfacing with MCUs lacking USB host support ... and that's likely what some of those extra connectors are for.All in all - at $45, it spendy, but good quality and a good feature set... but for $45, I shouldn't have to reverse engineer it ... thorough documentation should be provided.
