Purchased this set of 2 for cheaper than a single unit at a local dealer. Had to watch a video to figure out how to install, but it turns out it is incredibly simple. Took me about 5 minutes to remove the old struts and install these.

Direct replacement for originals in my RV. They work great and installation couldn't be easier.

Worked great. I used it to prop open a 53 lbs basement door hatch that it flush to the floor. I will try to add pictures later. I installed the struts nearly parallel to the door when it is standing straight up. I have one on each end. I did it this way so that it's not in the way of walking down the steps. I first tried it with 40 lbs struts but it barely did anything. These ones take almost all the weight off except right at the bottom when closing which I'm sure is due to the way I installed them in a non-ideal angle to the door. My project required stronger struts since I didn't make the struts perpendicular to the door like they should be to get the most holding power. If the struts were installed at a right angle, I'm sure much weaker ones would be needed so keep that in mind when ordering these. The weight of the door and the angle of installation are your two factors you need to consider... I wish there was a calculator to figure it out or something. I basically just used the trial and error method. Free Prime shipping both ways makes it economical. To mount the struts I used JR Products BR-1020 10mm Flat Gas Spring Mounting Bracket. You will need two sets of brackets if you want to mount both struts that come in this package.

I only needed one of these, however, I had the option of buying one for $30 + $11 shipping from the manufacturer; $30 +free prime shipping from Amazon; or $30 for two of these + free shipping from Amazon! I chose the latter & now have a spare. This unit snapped out (old failed item) quite quickly with a small spade bladed screwdriver. The new replacement snapped in even more easily! AND, I ALSO HAVE A SPARE!Update: 11 Aug 14 - Another one of these failed on our camper & I just installed the second unit. It was great to have a spare!Update: 31 Aug 14 - Misery abounds. Another two seem to be failing (they are 12+ years old), so another pair has been purchased & will be installed next month. (A total of about 20 of these are in use.)Update: 15 Sep 15 - Yup, another two needed. Hopefully this is the last for a while as I have just about swapped all of the original units out.
