I wore this hat on a week long canoe trip. It kept the sun (and the rain) off of my head and neck.

The black-colored mesh portion of this hat doesn’t completely block out sunlight, and subsequently, Ultraviolet Radiation as claimed in the product description. The mesh seems to be a two-layered design with front and back layers differing in size, but not at specific positioning to block holes at each layer—forming a zigzag-type design. The lack of this pinpoint positioning means sunlight can bypass through the holes at certain, different angles.Even if it was specifically offset, multiple layers would still be preferable to only two to ensure that sunlight cannot subtly seep through the holes.Another point of interest is the product tag pointing out (subtly, I may add) that the mesh portion is not UPF-rated, meaning the mesh could be entirely or weakly incapable of blocking the penetrative capability of UV.This would be equivalent to having two large, exposed openings on the sides of your head. The inconsistency of the mesh’s ability to block sunlight at all angles and the obscure nature of the mesh’s resistance to UV makes this hat a tricky buy for those who frequent their time outside (especially in the afternoon or near the equator where UV levels are the highest).Technically, your side hair could block sunlight at these potentially exposed openings, making up for the mesh’s pitfalls, but the variation of hair length and thickness may not guarantee full protection for the long term. You could also wear headgear below this hat that covers your head (or at least the sides) to offer full UV protection, but then the intention of having the mesh for ventilated cooling of heat build-up in the head is nullified.Other than that, the hat is too tight for my forehead, while the adjustable back strap on the top doesn’t significantly change the pressure applied to my head. The wide brim blocks sunlight very effectively, covering even beyond my neck portion (looking straight). The chin strap works well and allows enough adjustable freedom for seeking one’s comfort. The hat came folded in a plastic bag, but I haven’t seen or been disturbed by any noticeable creases that is often a point of contention for buying outdoor hats similar in design. The color of the hat came slightly darker than what is portrayed in the product photo (light gray), so color accuracy may not be fully representative of which colored hat you purchased.Picture 1: Sunlight (and UV) bypassing the mesh. It may not seem like a lot, but awareness of these subtleties could be vital for those it may concern.Picture 2: Tag stating that the mesh portion is not UPF-rated, meaning its protective capability for UV protection is in question.

Best $19 I've spent!!This hat is light weight, really soft material!!The bits that tighten the strap is very well designed and Doesn't slip like other cheaper designs!!The neck flap is attached such you don't have to worry it will fall off, and is complete around the back so no mosquitos get in!It's nicely foldable so you can put it in a pocket or backpack easily :)I'm so very pleased with this purchase!!Btw, 100spf!! Much needed sun protection for my pale skin ;)
