I bought one of these little 57-540 hammers 30 years ago and it has always been a real favorite, but it eventually succumbed to some nasty chemicals. Next to my old hammer, this new hammer is nowhere near the same quality - the casting impressions for the 'leather' finish, the crosshatch on the handle grip and the part & model numbers, etc are not crisp and clear like the old hammer, and the handle grip thickness has gone from 5/8" down to less that 1/2" in places, so it is not as comfortable or well balanced to hold as my old one. The material it is made of seems different too - a little slippery to hold. Very disappointing. Still, I expect it will 'do the job'.

Years ago I purchased a 5 ounce Blue-Point no bounce hammer from Snap-On tools. It's always been a favorite of mine for fine alignment of parts, miscellaneous gun smithing tasks, etc. When it came time for a replacement I found this nearly identical hammer. It will be perfect for what I've purchased for, but it somehow seems cheaper than the original. The surface feels less finished and the shot in the hammer's head feels less dense to me. Still, I expect that it will work as well - just not as nicely. The bright orange color makes it difficult to loose.
