I've had this rower for a little over a month now, using it 3-4 times per week and overall I'm pleased with it, especially given the price paid. It's no C2 (which I have used at the gym), but given it's less than 1/3 the price it's a solid value. And being new to rowing, I wasn't ready to shell out that much cash on something I wasn't sure I'd actually stick to using over the longer term. So this was the way to go.Operationally, I have no concerns, it provides decent resistance, and yes it makes a whooshing sound with each stroke, it's not so obnoxious that I can't hear my Bluetooth speaker over it at a moderate volume. I have noticed that when rowing hard, the front of it will lift and twist very slightly. The computer is average, but I have found usage for all of the metrics (except calories) in my workouts, so to me it's adequately useful.Assembly was average and took about an hour. Everything was well packaged and went together smoothly, except for the computer. There was no pressing it into position, as instructed, without a high likelihood of something breaking. I had to partially unscrew the housing, carefully pry the two halves apart and force the computer into place. By far, more of a battle than it should have been and the worst part of the assembly.Overall, no complaints, and the price I paid is a tremendous value. And if I end up using it so much that I beat it to death, it'll probably justify moving up to a C2 at that point.

I bought this model rowing machine a year ago for $280. Our local fitness club costs $240 per year, so with transportation there and back plus savings on showers three times/week, I figured the machine would pay for itself in six months, as it did. It gave me another five months "free membership" without need for maintenance. At the 11-month mark, the spring box, a $25 part, went. I'm not at all put off by that as I expected the need for some maintenance on any machine when using it as much as I do the rower. Happily, I had bought a Squaretrade warranty for it (just a little over $10), so it's been no problem getting that part, which is easy to replace. The machine was relatively easy to put together (mostly just attaching the pedals, monitor, etc.). It seems like a substantial piece of equipment, maybe not quite as heavy duty as you'd find at the gym, but certainly many, many grades above the cheap mechanical rowers on the home market. The action is smooth and the monitor is easily visible and helpful.Rowing on this machine is as easy or hard as you make it. I find the stats very useful and track workouts by time, distance, stroke count, and calories. The calories, of course, are not necessarily the calories I actually burned, but some kind of calculation the machine makes based on the average population. That's OK, it still gives me a good way to measure progress. Of course, the better you get at rowing and the more fit you are, the more time it takes to burn the same number of calories even when you up the difficulty. If you're new to rowing, be sure you look up videos on proper form and focus getting that right for the first week or two. After that, there are many workouts online if you like or make up your own. Don't attack yourself with the hardest to start. You will build strength and stamina (sorry) over time. I've found intervals work well, whether they're 1:1, 2:1, 3:1 or whatever full row:legs or 60:30:30 full steady row:sprint:rest or legs, etc. Starting as an overweight, older woman, over the first year, my own workouts went from 30-sec 1:1 intervals about 1.5 miles in 30 minutes to 2.5:0.5 rowing 3.5+ miles in about 40-45 minutes. I've been very pleased to be able to hike and shovel the recent heavy snow so much more comfortably this year than last.Overall, if you're looking for a good rowing workout at home, I highly recommend the Stamina 35-1402 ATS rowing machine.

I've had my Stamina 1402 for six weeks now. First of all, I think it's a fine, sturdy machine. It was fairly easy to put together even by one person. Once together, it glides very smoothly and has a good amount of resistance. No damper needed - the harder I pull the more resistance the machine gives back. In six weeks of using it daily for thirty minutes it's given me no issues at all. I'm very pleased with it and consider it a good buy for my cardio workouts. There a a very few things I don't care for but can live with. For me, at 5" 10, it's difficult to get into a proper catch position - I think the footbeds are mounted too high and there is no adjustment like a Concept II has. I may turn the footrests upside down to bring my heels closer to the floor. I don't care much either for the pivoting footrests, but that's certainly something I can live with and I'm able to get a strong drive with my legs. One thing I'd suggest, as others have mentioned is to switch the footrests from left to right to make it easier to strap in.All in all, with a couple of modifications to the foot beds, I feel that this is a machine that gives me a good workout, and should last a long time.

Fits the bill! OK, I know the gold standard in rowers is the Concept II and this is not thar. Costing far lesser, this is excuseable and my expectations were scaled accordingly. I purchased this after reading copius reveiws of the other mid to low-cost rowers and this had a good rating among rowers so I crossed my fingers and ordered. It did not disappoint. Amazingly, it assembled fairly easily - I did it myself even though it suggested 2 people. It worked well from the first pull and for the next 2 weeks after, so I felt safe in leaving a good review at this point. The resistance is medium and not adjustable but the motion is smooth and I can get a good upper body workout over time. I wish the range of motion was a bit more extended so I could get my core more involved. All in all, I recommend this to anyone looking for a reasonably priced in home workout. It appears sturdy and is built. well enough that I should have this for a while.

I am quite pleased with this purchase though maybe costs $50 too much (I paid $399 while the Stamina 1399 Air Rower has a plastic fan housing and a crappy monitor for only $299). It performs nice and smoothly. The mount for the bar is in the correct position (beyond the feet) compared to some other Stamina rowers where the bar is mounted between or right above the feet. I am 5'11" with a 32" inseam and a size 11 shoe. There is plenty of rail for me to extend my legs, especially if I sit toward the front of the seat. The resistance is wind but is as strong as a level 10 on a Concept rower at the gym. However it is not adjustable but I knew that going into this purchase. If you ever used the Concept rower at the gym, you would know that it is always on level 10 so, no big difference. The wind resistance is loud and blows quite a bit of air (I like that). Each stroke sounds like whooOOOOoom but doesn't bother me and is sort of rhythmic :). I am a little worried about how long the vinyl strap will last but so far it doesn't seem to be a problem. The only problem I had was with the position of the pedals...they are mounted too high BUT, I flipped them upside down so that my heels can rest on the floor when driving. When I return and load, my knees are now in the perfect position (or at least the same position as on the gym's concept rower). Also, the display doesn't seem to be counting right. It isn't displaying the timer. I could be using old batteries so will replace those. I would have given this a 5 star rating if it weren't for those 2 things but wow, what a great value!I will give an update in about a month. I intend to use it almost every morning.Updated later same day: I replaced the batteries in the monitor with new ones and now it is working properly.Update 7/17/2015: I have been using 4 to 5 days a week. Still going strong. Strap seems to be doing just fine and seat still slides nicely.
