I recently picked up the Spyder Men's Rain Jacket in Spyder Red and have had a chance to use it in various conditions. Overall, it's been a straightforward and reliable piece of gear for staying dry.The jacket's design is simple and functional. I like the bold red color, but I'm indifferent about the black stripes around the elbows. I found the fit to be neutral/regular and with slightly longer sleeves that usual, which worked well for my slim body type. The hood was a bit large for me, but I suppose it's sized to wear a hat or helmet underneath. The jacket lacks some features that are found on other products. Removable hoods, built-in vents in the pits or on the back, elastic waist drawcord are all absent here. As is the ability to pack the jacket into its own pocket for portability. However, none of these is a deal breaker, and all those design choices seem to highlight the main feature of the jacket: it's water resistance. The jacket has a high waterproof rating of 10000mm (per the tag, but the listing shows 20000), which suggests it should perform well in heavy rain. To simulate this, I put it in the shower with a cotton shirt underneath and was pleased to find that both the shirt and the inside of the pockets remained dry. A little water seeped through the zipper when hit directly with the water stream. This level of protection is the singular standout feature for the jacket. While the fabric is breathable compared to a plastic rain coat, during intense activities like running or power hiking, the lack of ventilation features meant it could get stuffy inside. This is not unusual for waterproof jackets, but it's something to consider if you plan to use it for high-intensity activities. On the plus side, the jacket allowed for a full range of motion during these activities. The build quality seems good, with durable materials and smooth-operating zippers. The jacket serves as a basic, reliable waterproof layer. It's not packed with features, but it delivers on its primary function of keeping me dry. At the $50 price point, it feels like a good value for what it offers.

Decent looking jacket. Medium is loose enough for me (155 lbs, 5'10") to fit a fleece sweater underneath. Have not had rain to test waterproof quality. Tested by splashing some water on the sleeve. Beaded up and ran off the outside, inside stayed dry. But seams are the most vulnerable area, and have not tested. Effective strong wind blocking.Compared to brand name jackets, which are often available at good discounts, I found this one lacking. Specifically,1. No waste cinch cord. Cold air can get under the bottom. Less sleek fit. Does have a hood cinch cord.2. No outside zipper cover. Makes it more likely rain will enter through the zipper.3. No arm pit vents. Even "breathable" fabric with pit vents gets clammy if you are exercising, so not a deal breaker.4, No inside pocket.5. Very thin and lite weight material. Makes it handy to pack for emergencies, but expect less warmth factor.6. The fabric and plastic zipper are stiff. There is a bulge in the middle front of my jacket (not my pot belly) that will not relax.7. No hood size adjustment strapA caveat about ALL modern "breathable" rain gear, not just this item. Do NOT expose to high temperatures (like leaving in your car on a sunny day), the inside layer will disintegrate.

This is a nice basic rain jacket that fits true to size. It's made of lightweight fabric, and compacts down to store easily in a bag or even a pocket. It is not insulated, nor does it retain a lot of warmth, but it is very waterproof and very comfortable. There are interior and exterior pockets, the zipper seems solid, and the stitching is well done. This is a great jacket for a downpour in the late spring or summer. The hood is generous but lightweight, there is a cinch cord at the hem, and the cuffs can be tightened. The listing states that there are mesh armpit vents, but there are not on this jacket. I took off one star for that, and for the fact that the stripes on the arm look like they would be reflective, but they are not. Overall, though, this is a great lightweight rain jacket that repels water and keeps you dry.
