This review is for "S.M.S.L D10 Headphone Amplifier USB Potrable Dac with 3.5mm & 4.4mm Balacnced Dual Mini Audio Amp Outputs Support 500mw 16ΩDSD256 PCM 32bit/384khz Hi-Res Earphone Amp (Black)."Disappointed. First impressions on opening the box were that this is well presented in a little pull-out drawer box with the device and a USB cable fitted into a cut-out foam cushion. However, instead of a simple paper sheet of instructions/product guidance there is a plastic, yes PLASTIC, card with a tiny QR code faintly printed on the back - I couldnt read the QR code anyway. Then when I came to use the product I realised there was no 3.5mm cable included - and the USB cable is just 4" long. I managed to eventually find a 3.5mm cable, but only a short one....note that I dont use these cables these days since the advent of good quality Bluetooth audio, so I ended up having to listen whilst holding my phone near my ear to accommodate the included short USB cable and my own short 3.5mm cable. Obviously I found a longer USB data cable to use. I know I could have plugged in a pair of completely passive headphones, but that would not be a like-for-like test using the same drivers.I did some direct comparisons of some of my favourite tracks - Private Investigations, Lang Lang playing Paganini, and Bruch's violin concerto. In every case, once carefully balancing the volume differences between the two sources, I preferred the bluetooth output over the DAC. Yes the DAC produced more bass, but the treble sounds especially on the piano track were jarring and far less musical. The three tracks always give me a spine-tingling effect when played on good equipment, and sadly there was no spine tingle with the DAC - it just wasnt musical enough, whilst the same headphones reproducing the sound via bluetooth outperformed the DAC and made my spine tingle.I cannot recommend this. It is an expensive gimmick with more attention paid to the style of its packaging than the substance of what you get for your money. £70 for a DAC and it doesnt even come with enough cables to use it, or a product guide that can be actually used. Three stars is my rating.

I'm going to keep this simple, it's have the kiwi allegro and the letshour dt03 which are this dongles direct competitors at this price. They all sound very good for the price but they each mostly excel in one area. The dt03 does sub bass the best, it's super deep and very clean. The Allegro does mids the best, mid bass is clean and vocals sound full. This dongle does the treble area the best, the treble is clean and it gives music more energy. Each dongle does what i mention about them the best but do the other things well enough. This and the Allegro don't go very deep with sub bass. The dt03 and this dongle don't have the fullest vocals compared with the Allegro. The Allegro and dt03 have a relaxed treble compared to this dongle. They all sound very good if you are not directly comparing to anything so but which one is better depends on your preferences, i personally prefer sub bass so I like the dt03 the most. The build quality is very nice, it's made of sturdy metal and i like the open glass design. This is the smallest dongle of the ones I mentioned. The dongle kind of looks like the questyle m12i, the m12i sounds better than any of these by the way. The m12i does bass, mids and treble flawlessly.Overall this is a good dongle if you like more energy in your music which is basically more upper mids and treble.

I tested this with the USB C port of a standard, inexpensive Android phone ("Blackview" is the brand) that I use as an audio streamer. I used Thieaudio Oracles, Dunu DaVinci, Sennheiser IE600 (all mid to high end IEMs), and for kicks, my Sennheiser HD600s full size headphones. All of them were plugged into the 4.4mm port.In every case, the sound was essentially indistiguishable from my desktop amp (Schiit Magnius) and portable amp (Fiio Q5). There are a lot of dongles out there in this price range of $70-$100, and I'm willing to bet that no one could tell them apart in a blind test. So in terms of sound, this one is good, but they all are. If someone tells you this is "bright" or "warm" or whatever, they probably would not be able to tell the difference in a blind test and are adding their own feelings onto their apppraisal. And if there is a difference, it's going to be incredibly subtle and immaterial to mostly everybody. The advantage of this device over something like an Apple dongle is the ability to use your headphones and IEMs that are cabled with a 4.4mm balanced jack. And there's apparently up to an entire half a watt of output into 32 ohms, which puts full size headphones in reach. Definitely, if your headphone comes standard with a 3.5mm jack, this device will drive it well. But it also had no problem driving my HD600s, which doesn't happen with something like the built in jack on a phone. For a headphone like that, which comes with a 1/4 inch jack, you will need an adapter or new cables (if you want to use the 4.4mm jack, you need balanced cables, about $30-$40).The 500mw of output comes with battery drain. In my testing, the battery drained about 25-30% faster than it does when using a separately powered amp. So in my case, I normally get about 12 hours of playback, and with the SMSL attached it was closer to 8. Some of that battery energy goes into heat, as the device gets reasonably warm to the touch. And it seemed to be warm even when nothing was playing, so from that I infer that it will drain the battery if plugged in even when not in use. I did test using a small powered hub to inject power while connected, but the device failed to work when the hub was powered. The hub did work, however, when not powered, but that defeated the point of the hub.Of course if you're using this with a plugged in laptop or PC, you don't have to worry about battery drain. But if you travel and want to use this with your phone, you might need to charge up more frequently than you're used to.Another tiny issue is the pair of internal LEDs. There's one on each side and they are very bright! When using this at night in bed, I had to cover it up beacuse it lit up the entire room. But that's a small niggle. The device feels very solid and well made. The windows are a visual treat, and the sculptured surface of the device provdes tactile feedback making it very easy to find the volume button without looking. The volume button is digital, which means there is no visual indication of the volume level as there would be with an analog knob (which is what my other portable DAC amp has). But the buttons provide a fine amount of adjustment without being tedious. In general, I dislike digital volume adjustment buttons, but these are better than most. All in all, I have a very favorable impression of this device. It's not my first item from S.M.S.L. They are a known company in the audio world and have a good reputation. It's well made, very simple, and very capable. The sound is as it should be. If your devices are all cabled with 3.5mm jacks, I'm not sure this would be better than the Apple dongle. But if you have balanced devices or more power hungry headphones, this would be a good choice. It's certainly more fun!
