They introduced me to this type of tool back in the late 1950s, but that one had a chain instead of a flat, smooth strap. It worked great for tightening and loosening all kinds of round things, from oil filters to galvanized pipe fittings. It was quicker than a stiltson wrench for a pipe. Those old chain-style strap wrenches had one big drawback, they left their marks all over the things we used them on. Modern strap wrenches, strap wrenches like this one, use a thick, strong, rubber belt, so it doesn’t mar the surface of the material. This strong rubber belt is just as effective as that old chain belt, and it doesn’t deface the surface. This wrench has a strap long enough to accommodate objects from 1 ¼ inches in diameter to objects 7 ½ inches in diameter with ease. With its drop-forged, heat-treated handle, this is a premium quality tool and well worth the $29.75 that it sells for.

This is a cheaply made strap wrench. The pivot anchor is just a roll pin and you can tell it was hammered in rather than pressed. There aren't any sharp edges or burrs anywhere on it that I could find. The strap itself is so stiff you may have trouble getting it around hard to reach filters. Functionally it's very usable and much better than not having one when you need it but I'm not thrilled with the quality. This will probably go into my RV tool bag.

Upfront disclosure: I received this item through the Amazon Vine program for review.Since my wife and I bought a house about a year ago, we have run into a number of situations where a strap wrench would have made our lives a lot easier. We kept saying that we need to get one and then forgetting amongst all of the different things going on at home and at work. So a few days ago I was checking my Vine feed and this popped up in the recommended items. I looked it over and found that it was exactly the type of wrench we have been needing for months. When it came I immediately found it was a classic designed strap wrench, exactly what I wanted. It has a long, heavy-duty reinforced rubber strap connected to a substantial handle designed to grab hold of the rubber strap and firmly hold it. So the next time we run into a problem like removing the trim ring on the ceiling mount of one of our ceiling fans, we have the tool. The next time we find something we need to grip that is just a bit too difficult to grip without the friction hurting our hands, or because it is simply too large in diameter to get a decent grip on, we have the right tool for the job. There was a huge sigh of relief when we both looked at this tool. This is one of those tools I expect will last for quite a long time and I am very happy I have it in my wrench drawer. I can easily recommend this one for anyone doing DIY work around the house.
