Exactly what I was looking for! I use Japanese incense without the bamboo core and had a helluva time finding a holder that would catch all the ashes and hold a full stick straight without having to snap it in half first. Pro tip: pack the ashes down first to make it dense enough to hold the incense. This is so much better than cleaning grimy ceramic holders after burning a stick. The bag of ash is smaller than I expected but I’m happy with the quality. A bag is about as big as the palm of my hand.

This is for charcoal incense users. You get a brick of charcoal - unless you are burning for a rave party in a big, open area it's going to suffocate you. It burns too hot too fast. Even if you control the incense by frequently dropping a little on it it'll eat the air way to fast. Some people kill themselves this way...accidental or otherwise. This is the hidden component - ash - and this is the best kind.Burn the Coal in a thick earthenware bowl - on top of sand. That's so it doesn't cause a fire.Light the coal and put incense on it, then - with tongs - rub it down into the incense and push some ash on top of it. You can turn it off (smother) with plenty of ash though a lid should be used. But to control the flow so it outputs like a standard incense stick this is the best. A little ash on top slows it down. And as the charcoal burns and the incense is burned it adds to the ash.I've also found this useful with standard sticks as a safety precaution. My favorite is Nag-Champa Goloka brand incense sticks...Again I use a big earthenware cup - a mushroom I did in a ceramics class long ago. Very thick walls. I fill sand in the bottom the put some of the ash in top and mix it a little. Then as the sticks burn and ash falls the fireproof base absorbs the heat and suffocates any deep fires. If I get distraccted I can "Turn off" the incense sticks by simply turning them upside down in the ash - they will keep burning slowly in sand but will go out immediately in the ash - this also stops ruining the sticks by wetting them or risking a fire by flicking the head off which is still burning and can set a carpet on fire.
