The Sharp ELT3301 is a wonderful electronic adding machine for moderate/occasional use. I am an avid collector and user of calculators, including business adding machines, and I own many models that are several times more expensive than this model, and after several days of working with this model, I can say that I really love it. There are other adding machines that have more functions and features, but for its price, it's the absolute best. The calculator is intended for moderate use. Why would I say this? Several reasons:(1) While printing is very reasonable, it's not as fast as some top-of-the-line models by IBICO, Sharp, Victor, or Monroe. If you are a super-fast typist, or you want to print out entire logs of calculations, and you require the fastest printers out there, get another model.(2) There's something about thermal printing that screams occasional use: Printing is black-and-white, so it won't print out negative numbers and subtraction operations in the standard red. It requires "special" paper that is somewhat more costly, but in return, it uses no ink, so there's never an issue of the ribbon drying out, of having to replace ribbons or ink rollers, and you never need to fear that the particular ink roller for your particular model will no longer be stocked... Printing is always crisp and beautiful.(3) The calculator doesn't come with tonnes of functions: It doesn't have square roots, it doesn't offer builtin date-calculations (though it does offer time-calculations). It offers the basic tax, markup, cost-sell-margin functions. It doesn't allow for inspection or printing, editing, or printing of past calculations. The ELT3301 can work in one of two modes: A standard 12-digit printing calculator, or a 10-digit printing calculator that prints very large numbers. I wasn't interested in this feature, until I saw the results before me, and realized how much easier it is for me to read the printout!I would be remiss if I didn't mention the absolutely ingenious and innovative way in this the thermal paper is inserted into the calculator: Rather than folding the end and trying to get the wheels to grab onto it, you simply open the cover, insert the paper from the back, lay it flat, and close the cover. This is surprising, but way more effective and convenient than what all other calculators do. Once you get used to it, you'll never want to go back.Adding machines are far less standardized in terms of their logic, than ordinary pocket and desktop calculators. Different models treat the Grand Total differently, some even going as far as overlapping the Grand Total register with the memory register (like the IBICO 1491X). Some adding machines handle constant operations differently, or how multiplication and division affect the Total register, etc. Here Sharp does the right thing every time. No surprises. The calculator is very dependable and a lot of fun to use. Some people confuse calculator entry logic with adding machine entry logic. These are very different. Electronic adding machines work like their mechanical and electro-mechanical forefathers for addition and subtraction, and work like modern calculators when it comes to multiplication and division. This actually makes a lot of sense if you think how these calculators are generally used, but this does take getting used to.If you need a faster adding machine with more functionality, then for about US$40 more you can get the Victor PL8000, which has tonnes of additional functionality, and has builtin help/documentation that can be printed directly onto the [thermal] tape... But for occasional use, I just love the Sharp ELT3301.
