I needed some very fine abrasive paper for the final touches to my turned projects. I found that if I use a combination of 1000 then 2000 and then either 3000 or 5000 grit, I get a brilliant shine on most woods. It also polishes the resin that I often use with the projects.

My kitchen counters were stained and scratched and I was working to sell my house. It was either replace or resurface. Even though I would have done this as a DIY project, the replace project would have been very heavy on my budget so since the alternative was to replace them anyway, I decided to give it a go at resurfacing with sanding pads. For the cost of the pads and an electric orbital sander along with a few hours, I was able to remove scratches, knife marks, stains. Using these pads in succession from 1000 to 5000 grit I was able to get a nice wet look reflection on the counter tops. I didn't polish and/or buff the surface so it didn't look like a shiny clear coat on a show car but a reflection was clearly visible and it looked new again like it did when we first moved into the house. If the alternative is the replace the counters (expensive), you may as well experiment with this and see if you can save a few hundred or thousands.
