I have to say, I'm a bit nostalgic when it comes to cassette tapes. I've got a stash of them from my younger days, filled with memories of visiting foreign ports when I was in the Navy. Some tapes I bought, some I recorded off radio stations and have no idea what the names of the songs are or who the artists were. Some tapes have decayed and won't play, so finding this cassette converter is a bit of a game changer for me because I can convert the tapes to digital format and preserve the tapes that still play. Ah, the memories! It's fairly easy to use once you understand the quirks (more on that coming). Seriously, just plug in your USB drive, pop in a cassette, press record, and you're off to the races. The included USB drive is a nice bonus. Everything you need is right there in the box, plus, it runs on batteries or AC power, which is very convenient. The quirks: The buttons can be a bit confusing at first because some of the button symbols are backwards. For example, the "play" symbol points to the left instead of the right (see my photos). The rewind button is marked with a fast-forward symbol, and the fast-forward button has the rewind symbol. Instead of being labeled "RW" for rewind and "FW" for forward, fast forward is "F.FW" and rewind is "F.REW" ...but once you get the hang of it, I wouldn't say it's no big deal, but it's very manageable. The converted recording sound quality is adequate for preserving those cherished old recordings, but it's not going to do justice to high-fidelity recordings. Plus, it only records in mono from stereo cassettes, which is a definite drawback for anyone wanting to preserve the original audio quality. Think 'good enough for a trip down memory lane', not 'mastering quality'.As for the sound quality from the speakers, it's adequate for casual listening but won't impress with it's depth, as is true of many small audio devices in this price range. It has plenty of volume, and the radio has good reception where I live.Overall, this device is a decent option and a good value for the money if you're looking for a simple way to transfer your cassette tapes to digital format. It's not perfect, and the sound quality has its limitations, but the ease of use and included USB drive make it a worthwhile tool for anyone with a collection of tapes they want to preserve.

I used to work in radio and I have a huge box of cassettes from my radio days. This is perfect both for listening to the cassettes, and converting them to digital format so I can share some bits on social media.

First, the good. This isn't the smallest recorder I've used, but it works, and recordings sound fairly good on digital media, whether recorded from tape or from the microphone. It ships with an AC adapter, but can also be powered by 4 AA batteries, which is a good thing, as I like to use NIMH low self discharge rechargeable batteries that can run for a long time. It even ships with a 16GB USB drive that is not advertised, an added bonus.I did have several problems with this recorder however. First, it may just be the age of the cassette tape I used for testing, but recording onto it using this recorder plays back somewhat quiet, distorted and my voice was almost overwhelmed by the hissing sound. This seems to be a problem that is fairly common to newer tape machines however, tried on several different tapes, though they are all really old, but I hesitate to blame the tapes' age for all of it. It could still be mostly age at play here in any case, since recordings to TF and USB sound much better. It is possible to record from the radio onto a cassette tape, but not onto digital media. If I try to start recording while the radio is on, nothing happens. But if I press down the cassette play button while the radio is on and then hold in the digital record button, the red light glows and recording begins, but it is silent. The recorder does convert from tape to digital mp3 format. But the problem is that it only records mono, so conversion from stereo tapes is not stereo. The recorder produces a single-channel mp3 file at 128Kb/s, which is definitely good enough for a mono recording, but I need my stereo cassettes converted to stereo mp3 files. I also don't get stereo output using headphones or a cable to a stereo speaker, but that isn't as much of a problem for me as stereo to mono conversion.Overall, though I like the sound quality when recording from the built-in microphone to the USB or TF and I like the fact that this recorder is powered by AA batteries and also ships with an AC adapter and a USB thumb drive, it doesn't meet my conversion needs, from stereo cassette audio to stereo digital audio, so I can't recommend it for converting those old tapes. But if a voice mp3 recorder is more your speed, I can recommend this one, as although it's fairly large, it does reproduce digital voice recordings well, and records to either USB or Micro SD/TF, which is definitely a good thing.

Like others my age, I have a bunch of cassette tapes from ye olden days of music. Some of them feature yours truly, singing her heart out. Remember when Six Flags had a sound studio, and you could record yourself singing the popular tunes of the day? THOSE tapes. And, of course, mix tapes. My biggest surprise opening the box is that they include a USB storage stick. Literally ALL YOU NEED are your tapes, and you're set to go! Instructions are included, but everything is really intuitive. Just insert the USB stick into the side of the machine, put your cassette in and press play, then on the front of the machine, press and hold "rec" until the red light appears. To stop the recording, just hold the "rec" button again on the front of the machine. I am recording each song as its own track, so after each song, I stop the recording. Then, I restart the recording with the next song. This way, when I upload everything to my PC, I won't have to use audio editing software to split the recording into tracks. Here is the room for improvement:1. Under each button for the cassette tape player, it's written what the button does (stop, play, record). But the buttons are on backwards. Don't underestimate how much this messes with your mind. So, any time you want to fast-forward the tape, you have to press >, which confusing on two fronts: rewind is traditionally abbreviated to RW. Seeing an F as the first letter makes you think it's the forward button (traditionally abbreviated FW or FFW). Secondly, the icon they use is fast forward. Even the play button is backwards (shown as a single arrow going backwards instead of forwards).2. They should remove the record feature from the cassette tape section. People purchasing this product are doing so for three possible reasons. Most likely, they're converting old cassettes to digital. It's also possible someone might use this simply to play their tapes or to listen to AM/FM radio. In NO scenario is someone going to use the machine to record audio ONTO a cassette tape. Here is why they should remove it: when you're doing the boring work of recording hours of tapes from one format to another, you're kind of not paying attention after a while. It would be easy to accidentally hit record on the cassette side and end up deleting a recording that was precious enough for you to have kept it safe for thirty years (or more)! In terms of sound quality, it's not great, but it's good enough. If you have a live recording of Pavarotti or Maria Callas that the world needs to hear, you will not want to use this machine. If you're listening to a recording of you and your BFF Heather belt out "Crazy For You" like you're Madonna, you're good. All of my kids have been in chorus, and my husband has been dragged to all the concerts. Last night, I told him that now he'll be able to listen to MY old chorus concerts. Won't that be fun?!?!?
