Received this meter today. It came with no batteries and no indication of which batteries it even takes. Ridiculous!

I needed to get something quick, I did not want to buy an expensive version without having it in hand.I do not have hardness test blocks. What I do have are the items that I have tested in the past with a calibrated (now deceased) Shore-D tester. The readings from about 15 to 90 were very close. Below 15, the readings were erratic, but those materials are best test with a Shore A. Above 90, the readings were off. This could be the meter that I have. A lot of instruments are not accurate at the extremes of their range. That leaves the possibility that my old meter could have been off even though it was calibrated,.I was surprised how accurate this meter is. I bought it to compare like items, so the exact reading was not of the utmost importance. Most of the time, the readings were repeatable, meaning that the reading was the same for a particular item, each time I measured it.I gave it 5 stars because it was accurate enough my purposes at a low price. I almost took off a star for the lack of a battery in the package, but that would be just petty. It is probably a good idea to NOT put a battery in it. I opened a pack of no name batteries of the correct size that had an expiration date of 2028. Except they had leaked. While I was headed out to buy new batteries, that occurred to me. I also need to remember to store them WITHOUT the batteries inside!

Meter appears to be made well. tested lead samples when unit arrived and got readings of 50-55 for soft lead, 70-75 for harder lead and 85 for Zink. Steel measured 95. I think that it works well for determining relative hardness of bullet lead.

I'm using this durometer in my testing of pickleballs. It allows me to test the hardness of the plastic used for different brands/models of balls and has proven to be very accurate.
