It's a steel plate to fill the hole in the side of a door when you remove a deadbolt. I used it on a steel door when I took off the bolt for a deadbolt as the door as entry controls and janitorial kept locking people out by locking the deadbolt.

I drilled holes in the center of these plates and used them to "beef-up" the the two slide-bolts on a typical pre-hung exterior french door. Typically the top goes into the thin soft wood door casing and bottom goes into the adjustable threshold plate. Neither of these thin woods provide any real security to someone kicking the door. Too make matters worse, overtime the bolt holes become more loose as the bolts bounce around in the holes from the opening and closing of the main door. By adding these plates top and bottom, you can add longer screws so the bolts are reinforced into the door framing. I did recess the plates and used 4-inch screws. Also, look into adding screws to secure the slide bolts so they cannot be opened from outside with a screw driver.
