I LOVED how deeply this story delves into one of my favorite unresolved loose threads from the Horus Heresy... the tragedy of the Emperor's failure to spread reason through the galaxy through his so-called "Imperial Truth," when viewed against the infinitely superstitious and fanatical cult that now rules the galaxy in His name.Previously, I might have not called that particular thread unresolved... I would simply say that the Emperor lost, and the religious fanatics won, but now that Guilliman has been resurrected, reason and superstition are at war in the galaxy once again, and even the Primarch might be no match against the power of faith and fanaticism.And that's just one storyline (though, in my view, it's the most interesting and important one) in this novel. The main plot is ostensibly about Mortarian and his host of plague of demons continuing their assault on Ultramar, and the forces of the loyal primarch Guilliman doing battle against him, with reasonably exciting results. Other storylines include that of a newly assigned Novamarine of the Primaris type who is not fitting in with adopted culture of his new chapter and, my least favorite, a side plot concerning the battle between Imperial and Plague-tainted titans.But this book gets five stars for me since it is the most thoughtful, funny and tragic exploration of the Emperor's failure to spread reason and to vanquish superstition, since the Horus Heresy books. And Guilliman gains additional complexity here, after being too often portrayed as an idealistic Boy Scout.

Amazing novel, you get more development for our favorite smurf, Typhus calls Morty a puss in his face, daemons gonna daemon and Mattieu must decide between loyalty to his lord or his GodHighlights include daemons being scared of a little girl, Sister of silence vs Sister of Battle, Novamarines get some love and Guilliman loses it again
