sound machining, quality construction, and smooth mechanics make this the best entry level / budget reel i've purchased & researched on Amazon. You can spend days trying to pick amongst the entry level reels, let me pass on the favor an experienced fly fisherman did for me, "this is the one". Very satisfied and will be purchasing this reel in other weights in the future.

just saw this go on sale and grabbed a couple 7/8 size to replace my 20-some year old Cabela's (back when Cabela's was actually quality equipment, before the bass-pro merger) 7/8 reels which are now breaking some plastic parts. I have one of these in 5/6 and have fished it since last year. With only one detail outstanding, this reel matches the build and performance of reels costing 5x the $35. Yes just accept it is Chinese reverse engineered consumer aluminum. The reel foot is a separate piece which is screwed on to the frame instead of machined as an integral part of the frame.... a couple minutes with JB Weld and some masking tape, leave it sit overnight to cure, and that "problem" sorted. The drag is remarkable. Face it, 99% of fly fishermen in fresh water, even those chasing musky and other large targets use the fly reel as a line holder. If you're chasing bonefish or GTs in salt, you are able to afford high end reels and you won't be reading this review. At $60 regular price this reel is a solid choice, at $35 on sale, it is a no-brainer.

This reel is very well made and the drag is smooth and quiet. The color choices are also great. Save yourself some money on your reel and buy a nice rod instead. My only regret is that I didn't go for one if the large arbor models from Piscifun, but the Aoka still holds all of my line and backing just fine. This reel is perfect for small stream applications and I am very happy with this purchase.
