Excellent multicolor dry highlighting capabilities. Came with many refills. I still have the one I used in college. Fits nice in backpack.

This is a neat little pencil that is like those multicolored pens, that have 4 colors in one pen, only it’s colored pencil. It comes with two extra lead of each color. It is a bit confusing on how to operate it the first time but if I had to give a tip on how to use it, gravity is your friend for bringing the lead out and putting it back. The color saturation when using is okay, not super opaque. Also you have to make sure you don’t have the lead out too far or it’ll snap very easily. It also comes with a little tiny sharpener that’s only the size of the lead so you can sharpen the lead to a point.

It holds all 8 colors within the barrel, and the clip indicates the currently selected color—just turn it to switch. A color swatch appears under the clip to show which lead will come out next. Pretty slick!The included instruction sheet is clear, with both text and photos, and I highly recommend reading it before using the pencil. There are a few cautions you'll want to be aware of, and improper use could damage the mechanism—so it’s worth taking a minute to understand how it works.I’m giving this automatic pencil 5 stars, with just a couple of caveats:It does feel a bit complicated at first, but I expect that with continued use, it’ll become second nature to load and switch colors properly.I also thought the price point was a little high—but this is a Pentel product, and I’ve had consistently good experiences with their quality. The build of this pencil reflects that same standard. The set also includes a sharpener and eight small tubes, each containing two pieces of colored lead to match the pencil’s eight colors.All in all, I’m glad to have this on my desk—it’s a fun, functional tool I’ll enjoy using whenever I want a splash of color.

This is a very neat multi-color mechanical pencil. It’s a design that I haven’t seen before. Multi-color pens are common because the plastic ink cartridges are flexible. This pencil has a unique design that lets each pencil lead drop into place after you’ve selected the color. It seems well made and it makes me happy to know that somewhere people are inventing new types of pencils. This was $28.99 when I got it. It does come with extra lead (only 2 of each color), but even so it seems expensive. For less than this one pencil you could have a full set of 24 Prismacolor colored pencils. This multi-color mechanical pencil only has primary color leads while the Primacolor set has a much greater variety. So it’s a cool novelty but it’s totally impractical. It would probably make a good gift for someone.

PENTEL Multi 8 Color Pencil Lead Holder 2 mm + Refills. This is a 2 mm lead holder that comes loaded with 8 colors of lead and includes a sharpener and 8 refills (2 leads extra of each color). The illustrated instructions are very clear; the lead holder is easy to use but you have to follow those directions or your lead can break or jam and you may damage the holder. These color leads are not the very soft leads of artist’s color pencils – they are drier and the colors less saturated. They work well for highlighting because unlike marker highlighters they don’t bleed through the paper. I like them to highlight things in my day planner and add little decorations. The holder will work with any 2 mm lead including graphite, though other brands are usually longer so you have to break them in half to fit the Pentel. This makes the fourth Pentel multi pencil I own and I love them. So why 4 stars instead of 5? Well, it’s weird to me that this model costs so much more than other versions of Pentel’s Multi 8 and Super 8 that have the exact same function and lead type. It’s a great product but you can find the same thing (Pentel brand) for much less.
