I use mechanical pencils all the time for school. Like all people, I make mistakes on paper and try to eliminate them without leaving smudges. I only use Pentel erasers because they erase pencil marks completely, without ripping the paper, and without leaving smudges. You don't need to apply much pressure to get the job done.

**If you've never bought any of these erasers before:** They are amazing, genuinely the best erasers I've used as a university student obsessed with stationary. They erase so cleanly and rarely leave ghost trails behind. The sleeve is also a nice touch as it makes it easier to grip onto the eraser and protects it from lead smudges. I highly recommend these, and particularly the white eraser for reasons I will get into below.**If you've bought the white eraser and are curious about the black eraser:** Its erasure quality is comparable to the standard white eraser, but in a size that is much smaller and thinner. However, it takes more effort to erase cleanly with the black eraser, likely due to its comparably smaller size. I'd say it takes me 1.5x longer to cleanly erase something with the black eraser compared to the white eraser. However, if you're willing to put in the effort, it will erase just as well as the white eraser. This all being said, there are some perks to using the black eraser over the white eraser - the black color means that you won't see any lead markings on the eraser that collect over time, unlike the white eraser which turns a white-ish grey after long-term use from pencil lead sticking to the eraser. The black eraser that I use still appears to be the same black color as the day that I opened it from the plastic - the color hasn't faded at all, unlike my white erasers. Additionally, the black eraser's smaller size and lesser thickness means that it's very easy to store and take with you on the go if you're a student.I would recommend the black eraser if portability of the eraser and/or the color of the eraser matters to you. Otherwise, I recommend and prefer the white eraser as it's much easier to erase with and is still fairly portable. I cannot verify how well either eraser works for art however as I only use the erasers for my writing (I do not draw and I am not an artist).**Info on the comparison images:** The lead used was Pentel Super Hi-Polymer Lead HB 0.5/0.7 mm size, respectively. Each image set is a before erasure/after erasure comparison, where the white eraser erases the top sentence while the black eraser erases the bottom sentence. The final image is a comparison between the size of the black eraser and white eraser.

I first had the opportunity to try this eraser out when I purchased a Pentel mechanical pensil , it came in the package .I do a lot of graphite drawings and I find this is an excellent product ,I would like to point out it does erase cleanly and effectively . I see some reviewers had smudging problems and I would like to draw their attention to the fact that not all pencils are made the same , in my drawings I use the best quality pencils I can find ,I buy German , Austrian , Czech and British etc. high quality graphite does not smudge, also use a paper that does not have a deep tooth again , quality . I have many other types of erasers I use in my drawings they are all tools in the tool box for different applications .

This is my fourth semester of math (remedial math, college algebra, trig and currently an. geometry) and so I have been searching high and low for a great eraser -- goodness knows I make tons (TONS) of mistakes. I started with a MagicRub but the texture felt weird and it seemed to crumble. I then was hooked on the Pentel large white erasers (same as the hi-poly black, just bigger and white). I loved the eraser itself, but after use, the eraser gets too "rounded" to get into tight spaces and worst of all (OK, I'm a little OCD) the white eraser gets soooo dirty and dingey (sic) looking. Even when I kept it in its little wrapper. These little black erasers rock. Perfect size and when it gets all beat-up in my pencil bag, it still looks good! (I am *such* a girl, right?) The size is comfortable in my hand and allows me to erase - quite effectively (
