The installation was interesting to say the least. I needed more tools than the directions called for. I had to use an impact wrench with a socket adapter and torx socket to break the factory bolt loose (the little torx wrench they give you will not work if you’ve never had those bolts out) and an impact driver to set the riv nut post. The directions need better pictures or better descriptions. The shock itself seems decent, it works on my heavy tailgate, and i wasn’t sure it was going to have enough clearance but once i finished the install it’s very close but good. As far as longevity we’ll have to see.

I installed this kit on my 2008 Ram 2500. It only took about 20 minutes to install. I am familiar with a nut-cert type threaded fitting. If you are not…the instructions, while written OK, don’t show an actual picture of where this fitting will go. They have a drawing…but no picture. The cable retainer on my tailgate has a limiting tab to prevent the cable from being able to rotate past a certain point. I was unable to use this kit without bending and flattening that tab to allow more rotation of the cable end. It was hitting the gas shock. Also, the gas shock (lower end), bumps against my taillight and truck bed while closing. I have to move/push my tailgate to the right to allow for a bit more room before closing.I believe the lower mount extends out too far. I am very familiar with using gas shocks and their mounts. A shorter mount would have been much better. Since this is rubbing against my tail light and now scratching my truck, I can only give it 4 stars.Beyond that problem, it makes opening the heavy tailgate MUCH easily. Basically unlatch it and just let go. It gently lowers without slamming. Closing the tail gate is some easier, but still requires a strong lift. My wife says it is easier to lift…and I agree with her.While I can’t speak to the longevity and I do have to make sure my tail gate is pushed to the right, I am pleased with the benefits this kit provided.MY PERSONAL COMMENTS:I am an approved Amazon Vine Member. As the headline states: Works Well But Might Need An Impact Wrench - 2003 RAM 1500I just finished installing this an hour ago. At times it was quite frustrating as the instructions were vague in some areas. Also I used an impact wrench with a 45mm Torx bit to remove all the Torx bolts. The supplied 45mm Torx wrench didn't budge the factory bolts. It could just be my truck is 22 years old and has some rust to it. But I would have not been able to complete the installation without the impact. I'd suggest to spray the bolts prior with PB Blaster if you have an older truck in the salt belt. I was going to give up once or twice but figured I was too far into the install to bail out.With all that said the system works well. Both opening and closing the tailgate is effortless. The first few times the factory cable became bind-up with the shock. I was able to move it around and so for so good, but I'll be keeping an eye on it.Presentation was really nice and all parts look very solid.For the price you can't beat it!
