FCON-T01 FISHEYE CONVERTER

This lens is more like a cross between a fish-eye and wide-angle lens but it offers a lot of versatility. I am enjoying the shot thus far and will up date after a trip that includes water...FYI - It asked about zoom but that isn't what this lens is for. The camera's mode of zoom is still functional.

I've previously been disappointed by the weak magnification of the TCON-T01 telephoto conversion lens for the same camera, so I was somewhat reluctant to spend another chunk of money on the FCON-T01 fisheye. After waffling over it for a few days, I finally just went for it anyway, and let me tell you, I'm glad I did.I'm very new to fisheye photography (and, frankly, wide-angle photography in general), so I'm not sure how this lens measures up against a top-notch fisheye, but for someone like me who just wants to get everything in front of me in one frame while I'm hiking, it's just the ticket. Its 130° field of view feels extremely large even compared to the ultra-wide-angle camera built into my smartphone, and it takes much better photos too. Better yet, you can still use the camera's onboard optical zoom, so if you suddenly want to take a photo of something that's not within arm's reach of you and there's no time to swap lenses - no worries. Unlike the telephoto converter, this one doesn't feel like a one-trick pony, and I'm tempted to just keep it on all the time. There are a few minor drawbacks I should note:- The very wide flared lens body partially obstructs the flash strobe and completely obstructs the LED, making both useless. If you tell the camera that this is attached (which isn't strictly necessary), then it won't even let you try to use the flash. I pretty much never take flash photos, so I don't mind, but if you do, then this could be an issue.- It's heavy and bulky. The camera weighs about 250 grams alone, but this lens increases that weight to just under 400 grams. It's no longer pocketable with this lens attached, and it protrudes considerably from a belt holster, which often causes the lens cap to get knocked off when I get up out of a chair or car seat while it's strapped to my belt. It's maybe not the most practical for everyday carry; once the novelty wears off, I'm probably going to stow it in my camera bag and only get it out for hikes.- It feels fragile. I don't worry too much about dropping the camera alone unless I'm standing over very hard rocks, but the fisheye lens's massive ring feels like it would be the first thing to hit the ground if I dropped it while it was attached, and I don't think it would survive being dented very well. I probably wouldn't even mention this if it were designed for any other camera, since cameras are usually fragile and this lens doesn't feel any more delicate than average, but in this case it's definitely not as rugged as the camera it's made for. I suspect it's also more likely to break in a fall than the much smaller TCON-T01 telephoto converter, but I'm not sure.- It needs the CLA-T01 adapter to connect to the camera. The camera itself has a bayonet-style quick-connect lens shoe, while the lens here has a fine threaded attachment, so you need the adapter to go between them. For whatever reason, neither the lens nor the camera comes with the adapter.Anyway, I'd say that this is a great lens overall, and the one I'd recommend the most out of the 3 or so that are offered. It's easily the most versatile, and it takes an already very adaptable camera and makes it even better.

I loved the pictures I could capture using this lens. I was in South America for 5 weeks and used it to take pictures of our rooms that captured far more than without the lens, but where it really shone was in the Galapagos Islands. Underwater it took some of the most incredible pictures. The only reason I would not rate it a 5 is that I found it trapped air bubbles between the lens and the body of the camera. This required me to unscrew the lens underwater and reattach it.I would recommend this to anyone with a TG-1 who is going to be doing any snorkeling.

This is what I expected. It's good enough that Oly brands it. The camera has a setting specifically for this converter. This is a solid hunk of glued optics, so water is not an issue. This gives a full-frame image -- no tunnel-view vignetting.I use it for hiking in situations where it's impossible to step back for a wider view. Also improves underwater shots while snorkeling.Update: I've used this a /lot/ since I purchased it. The quality of both still images and video is /very/ good.Later Update: I still use this a lot and still like it. The weak link is the nylon-ish connector that bayonets into the camera around the lens and holds the convertor. It has a few tiny prongs that fit into the camera and get broken over time. I've never dropped the convertor as a result of this weak connector, but it does seem like a poor system for a camera designed for tough use.

i failed to realize that another adapter was necessary to fit this on my camera.... so i am unable to mount the lens to see how sharp it is... the quality of construction seems high... i would have waited to do the review but i have searched the internet for the adapter and it is unavailable... out of stock... i have no idea when that adapter will be available... if you are looking to purchase this lens make sure you have the adapter...update:i found the adapter on ebay and ordered it from japan... i notice that currently someone is selling the adapter on amazon from hong kong... i have since used the lens and i love it and it works equally well underwater.... the adapter is plastic and doesnt seem robust but on the camera it works well....
