Despite usine this on a full from D780, I now consider this my new avorite lens and use it about 90% of the time... It does feel a little more plastic than some of the more expensive lens I have got, but I guess you get what you pay for... As for the quality, I havent been able to fault it... Maybe one day I will get the more expensive 35mm meant for full frames, but for the time being I am more than happy with the picture quality this lens gives.
Classy and smooth.

Lens was listed as used but arrived looking brand new. Fairly reasonable focus, dies have a little trouble with depth unless there are contrasting colors.Very sharp images and captures quite a lot of detail. Makes my camera feel like an old 35mm which is really cool.Macro stuff turns out really nice as well.

Wow, great lens. I bought this as a compromise between wanting a wider aperture/faster lens and to improve my macro photography and I am extremely pleased I did.On the macro side, I have tried the very very cheap alternates e.g. reversing ring and screw on close up lens (attached like a filter) and they work, but not easily and with less control over setup, than a simple point, focus, shoot, you get from a true lens. Yes, as per other review comments, you have to get close, yes that might reduce some light and yes you might frighten off that butterfly you were chasing around the garden all morning. But for my macro interest e.g. electronic components, still life and the such, they aren't going anywhere :-) That said, I bagged some good close up bee shots at the weekend, no issues. But this lens is more than a macro lens, it is really good - clear, sharp, fast, quiet - for street / walk about photography. The kit lens on my D3300 is 18-55mm, a very versatile range for most things and it was strange at first to have a fixed focal length, but that didn't last long. Having a fixed length makes you think about composition more, framing the shot up, using your feet instead of zooming, and that is not a bad thing.Having a relatively wide aperture f2.8, versus my kit lens f3.5, allows for more light so faster shutter speed to freeze motion and improve sharpness and much better bokeh. The focus on this thing is really quick and very quiet and pin sharp; only in macro use to I override what the lens might settle for, but that is a composition decision or I may purposely be focus stacking.Given the expense of true macro lenses and the advantages of having a faster lens, this is a a great compromise - you get a perfectly usable macro lens and a fantastic street lens in one.If I were to lose this or if it were to break, would I buy it again? Without a doubt.Updated: Added example macro shop of resistsor from my electronics kit.

Many forum threads have pondered whether to choose the 40mm micro of the 35mm 1.8. I have owned both, used them extensively and can safely conclude that the 40mm micro/macro is the better all-around lens. It can do most the 35 can do, but offers the added bonus of macro and superior sharpness and resistance to chromatic aberration. Here are the pros of the 35mm 1.8- affordable prime lens- fast 1.8 aperture makes it potentially wonderful for indoor and low-light shots when flash is not available or permitted- extremely sharp if you get a good copy (I've owned two copies. One was tack sharp all the way down to f/1.8. The other had a lot of chromatic aberration and purple fringing wide open).- great starter lens for a photo classHere are the cons of the 35mm 1.8- purple fringing wide open- blurry wide open (what's the point of 1.8 if you can't use it?)- lens hood is way too small- build quality is plasticky (but this applies to 40mm micro as well)Here are the pros of the 40mm micro- A great lens for amateur food photography (at the actual restaurant/kitchen with actual food)- Nikon's most affordable macro lens- f/2.8 aperture is still very good for general photography- Macro feature works like a charm- Lens is lightweight enough that you can get away with handheld shots- 40mm focal length (60mm on full-frame) makes it good for product photography of larger objects- has focus limiter switch to disable macro and speed up autofocus- great manual focus feelHere are the cons of the 40mm micro- autofocus hunts more than a regular af-s lens- you're way too close to subject if you want 1:1 magnification (where 24mm wide object fills length of frame)- Max aperture is f/4.4 at 1:1, but that's normal for all macro lensesBecause both lenses produce the equivalent of 52/60mm on a film camera, neither is appropriate for head & shoulder portraits, unless you shoot in landscape orientation. Both are great for full body or waist-up portraits. I like shooting up close, so I think you can fit a maximum of two or three people in the shot with these lenses. I would go wider for group photos.Overall, though, I would choose the 40mm macro lens. It's sharper overall, focus is pretty fast (even when it hunts), and has the added value of close-focus/macro ability. Great for food & product photos.
