I purchased these because it advertised up to 36 miles but in reality they don't even connect within a mile. The longest distance so far is around half a mile. I am very disappointed and should have returned them immediately after realizing this but didn't try them until a couple weeks after purchasing. Definitely regret this purchase

Distance is very good and are very durable. Navigating some of the functions takes reading.

I can't claim to have used them a ton. I bought them for the kids as a Christmas gift, but I also bought them for the family for hikes, camping, and the possibility of an emergency. Bought 2 xtalkers 4 years ago for comparison. I still have the xtalkers, but they def are for back up. The big thing is the range. The gxt's far exceed them, and I haven't really tried to max that out yet. So far houses and trees haven't stopped the gxt. The most impressive test was we and friends went for a hike. My mom was in town visiting for xmas. She's in her 80's and got tired probably a mile+ in. She and I walked back to the my truck to wait for the others. Never lost touch, and the reception was clear. I'm not sure how far away they were but at least 2 miles with trees and hills. We're in Colorado. Was very impressed. Xtalkers had trouble even if I could see who I was talking to. I've only charged 1 radio, and that was after finding it when the kids used it, and had left it on. The Xtalkers were always dead because something in my pack would eventually press the power button, and I wouldn't know unless another signal keyed in. Gxt has a knob at the top you twist to turn on. Gxt's are bigger, but that's okay with me. The ear piece kinda sucks. My oldest broke his immediately, but that was his fault. The fit of them is what I don't like. Basically they don't want to stay on your ear. Will probably order a diff type. I did get the gmrs license, but haven't messed with that yet. The xtalkers do work with the gxt's as long as you have the gxt's on the family channels. Overall I'm very happy with them. One day I'll try HAM, but this is great for my needs. These also have the weather stations if needed.

These have been solid walkie-talkies and as a group end up being a decent price. We've been using them for day camps and overnight camps. We've had no issues with signal strength in a 15000-foot building and the half block radius around the building to a local playground, or on the 50 acres or so we were out on for overnight camp near Yosemite. The only issue we had in the mountains was that they would occasionally pick up trucker's radio chatter from the highway 10 miles away! If we'd had cell service to check the manual I'm pretty sure there is a setting to set up a more private network but it wasn't a big deal. Some people have mentioned trouble reaching 35 miles–if you are looking for something while you are driving as a group, I'd suggest looking at real CB radios as past experience has shown these type of radios don't hold up to that.Battery life was excellent. During the day camp when they had constant use they lasted 10 hours and then hit the chargers. On the overnight camp, some went a day or so before needing to be plugged in.If you are planning to use the earpieces that came with it you might deduct half a star. They work fine but are far from comfortable. There were only 3 weeks of use when we needed the earpieces for hours at a time, and if it had been much longer we would have been shelling out for better and more comfortable units. As it was they are a great addition and did what we needed them to do.The only other thing to say is it is wise to give everyone a bit of training on walkie-talkie etiquette. They beep after someone stops talking, so you don't need to say over or anything like that, but it is helpful for people to know that if they forgot to say something, to wait for others to respond so they don't talk over each other.
