My son loves these swords. They have a plastic dowel that runs from the hilt to about 3/4 of the blade length. They are safe for stabbing, slashing, and chopping at my three year old. They hold up to a surprising amount of abuse. Think of them as disposable, when the glue fails or the dowel breaks or the foam blade tip tears off… throw away and grab another. They are $4 per sword and absolutely worth it!

These swords are so much fun, my kid has a blast playing with them. A little too much and a few of them broke through the foam padding. The swords have a strong, soft, and durable handle/hilt that has a hollow plastic tube that runes down the center of the handle and the "blade" and the "blade" itself is made of foam. For obvious safety reasons the plastic tube doesn't run from end to end so that a poke, jab, or stab wouldn't cause any damage or hurt. Problem is if you have a kid that likes to lean on the sword tip that eventually the tube will tear through the sides. This is out of the manufacturers hands though, so not holding them accountable. They are very durable and we've had lots of fun. A quick bit of superglue and we basically got them back to their previous condition.

Please never buy this, it is total waste of money, sword last only two days!! stay away. I have not seen any better alternative, I would suggest if you still want (my kids were behind my life for a sword) make one at home using cardboard.

These swords are fun and for the price, they are not bad. However, I have 3 boys, plus my husband gets into the games, and pretty soon, we had one foam sword with no foam and just the plastic part that would REALLY hurt if you got whacked with it. So we bought another set, since we always seem to have kids playing ninja or knights in the basement. And obviously, we wrecked 2 more swords. Again, they are decently made, and fairly cheap, so I cannot really complain. Besides, I am sure my kids are really tough on any physical toy such as this.

We got these toy swords for Christmas and they have stood up much better than foam swords more than twice the price. It's February and they aren't broken yet, which in a house with two little knights and a princess constantly battling is impressive. I think I saw another review that was concerned about safety, but they clearly way more cautious than I am. You would be hard pressed to raise even a red mark, let alone a bruise, with these even with the most enthusiastic use.I will note that the firmer core of the sword does not extend all the way to the tip, but ends about three quarters of the length along the blade. This does make the tips a bit bendy especially after heavy use, but is probably a reasonable trade-off for safety.Update: These swords lasted from Christmas until late October before their inevitable demise due to excessive use. I think that's a record and I'm getting another set for this Christmas
