Like many other reviews have stated, when mine arrived it was dirty, had a gritty type residue stuck to it and it was stiff and hard to operate...after a few minutes of messing with it I had this black stuff and fine gritty substance on my hands...this same stuff was in the packaging & on the tool itself. My thoughts were that it had been stored somewhere that was very dirty/sandy/windy & dirt/grime stuck to it because of the oils on the tool-there was a significant amount of it....i had to really examine the tool because my initial impressions were also it was used...but I found no indications of that on the tool. I cleaned this thing up with some WD40 and operated all the components multiple times....got all the grit and grim off it, no longer leaves the residue on my hands and it works great....not sure what the root cause is for this but there is evidently some kind of x factor here causing so many to have this experience. For me, it was no big deal...its a tool....tools will have some level of oil, be dirty & will show signs of wear....I am very happy with my purchase and would not hesitate to repurchase....however, it was strange having to deal with the grit, grime, oil and black residue out of the package.

Every tool is slightly different so I can only tell you about my experience with this exact one. This is by far the most expensive multi tool I have purchased. There are some pros and cons in my opinion. The pros are its very substantial and definitely better made than a few gerbers I have. The pliers are smooth no slop at all and all the other tools are well made. The finish is perfect and seems like it will stand some abuse. Nice size! Now the cons... The pliers are mega difficult to open or close. It may open easier with a substantial amount of use but ive opened and closed the thing 100 times and its still really stiff. I can't count how many times I've pinched my hand trying to close this thing up. This is not a 1 handed tool nor would someone who has weaker hands be able to operate it. Also you basically have to open it all the way up to get any other tools out. Like the knife or philips screwdriver. Then close it again to use. I find it precarious to close the stiff pliers with a knife blade sticking out of it. Would be very easy for your hand to slip and recieve a pretty nasty cut. My gerbers tools open outward with the pliers closed. I find this to be faster and safer. Other than that it works well and I would rate it 4 stars with room for improvement. If it opened up easier it would be a 5 star tool for sure.

I feel like this tool has its attractive points but in this day In age, we need to change a few things1: Get rid of the 420HC steel. There are farrrr superior steels in the same price bracket (as far as cost to manufacture) like 154cm, 14C28N, D2 , I could go on and on honestly, my point is that the blade steels on these haven't changed since their release and I think that's a problem. Yes, there are other models (totally different tool sets) with upgraded steels but you should not have to buy an upgraded/expensive model to have a contemporary steel. By the way, I'm not saying that it should have the best of the best, I'm saying that they should come standard with something in the same price bracket such as one of the steels that I mentioned earlier.2: No pocket clip on a tool of this size is ridiculous. Period. point blank. If the P4 and Arc can have a clip, I don't see any reason why this one cannot. The wave is capable of having a clip, which came out over 20 years ago so it's definitely not a time related issue. Leatherman COULD DO THIS IF THEY WANTED, they just don't care enough about their consumers to listen, people have been asking for a clip on this tool since it's inception. All in all, it's a functional tool thats compact and versatile. It should hold up just fine..OH, BIG LETTERS HERE: DO NOT BUY THE $9 PROTECTION PLAN. LEATHERMANS HAVE A 25 YEAR WARRANTY. THEY WILL FIX WHATEVER BREAKS ON THE TOOL OR IF IT CANT BE FIXED DUE TO A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE, THEY WILL REPLACE THE TOOL. An Extra 9-10 bucks for a protection plan you don't need is just giving money away. Leatherman stands behind their products, they even have an upgraded warranty if you register your tool on their website, it takes it from 25 years to a 40-year warranty which is basically life. Once you hand it down to your son,if you haven't lost it by then 😆 and it's still standing up well, there's no need for a warranty. It's service life is complete.

This tool is so versatile and works great. It’s great size and the tan color is perfect. I use it daily and it’s money well spent. The case holds up great too. I wish I would have bought it sooner in life. It’s easy to pull out of the case when you are working. It locks in place and works great. You won’t be disappointed. I highly recommend this, especially if you are a female.
