This is fun for the pricepointthe game itself is funThe rollup boat could be thicker and unrull better (it has a little shape memory)and the pieces are snalll and toybut again..pricepoint - for the price it's of reasonable quality and lets you know if this format is something you want to ursueWhile this was sent to me for review, I take that job seriously. Getting people the wrong product is wasteful, irresponsible and a hassle for everyone. Not everything I review gets high marks -- BTW, I live in a high sales tax state, review items aren't exactly at-no-cost for me]

A chess game for 3 or 4 players. Allows younger kids to build confidence as they can tag team to take down their more skilled instructor.

I got this for my husband who is a chess enthusiast and plays in competitions regularly, since I thought he might enjoy bringing it to his chess club. It's a little weird and probably not for intense chess purists, but he's excited about it and if you're willing to have a little fun with the game this is a good way to go!This set comes with a carrying bag that seems sturdy enough, and all of the pieces fit nicely. The mat smells pretty strongly when you first open it (and it doesn't exactly feel like leather, so I'm a little skeptical about that), but the board is nicely printed on it and I like that it's very easy to lay out and roll up again. It also comes with instructions which are especially helpful for 3-player chess, since the pieces move a little oddly! It also comes with 2 bags for the pieces, but since there are 4 colors of pieces, you have to put two colors together in each bag.The pieces themselves are very very small, which I guess makes sense since more of them have to fit on the board, but it did take me by surprise! The pieces are also not the best quality plastic (see photos)--they work fine, but they're definitely not great. The last thing to note is that there is no black color pieces, the colors are: blue, white, tan, and dark brown. In the item listing it looks like there is a black set, but they are just dark brown. It's not really an issue, but just another thing to be aware of before purchasing.

My father taught me how to play chess about 70 years ago. I've never been a fan of chess variants. I prefer long, relaxing, traditional chess games. But I couldn't resist the opportunity to explore three and four player variants. The board layout and rules described in the instructions represent just one of several variants of these three and four player games. I think knowing the starting positions and allowable movements of the pieces is enough to be able to play. Knowledge of traditional chess openings and strategies are not necessary; I have no idea how the Queen's Gambit opening would work. The board layout and movement of the pieces can get a little confusing, especially for the three-player variant. Be sure to watch that your opponents don't make a mistake. As for the quality of the set, I think it's reasonable for the price. The board (I have no idea whether or not it's leather) is reasonably thick and rolls up instead of being folded; so, it tends to curl a bit. The pieces are plastic and nothing to write home about. The included instructions are not very extensive, the diagrams are not easy to read, and it provides no tips on strategies. The storage bags and carrying case result in a convenient, lightweight package for storage and transport. I've yet to play a game with others, but I think it will be fun next time family members visit.
