Description says this is made from crystallized polylactic acid (CPLA). I may be wrong because there is so much conflicting & confusing info but here's what I learned from my Google research:Polylactic acid (PLA) is a plastic material made from plants aka a bioplastic. Crystallizing PLA makes it more heat resistant and more strong/rigid...which also slows down the biodegradation of it.This PLA is commercially compostable only. You cannot compost this at home. Commercial composting facilities available to the public are rare and inconvenient to access."PLA degrades very slowly in ambient temperatures, often as slowly as other plastics. Environments without the necessary conditions will see very slow decomposition akin to that of non-bioplastics, not fully decomposing for hundreds or thousands of years." -WikipediaBased on this information, I'm not sure if PLA is better for the environment than traditional plastic and some studies show that it may be even worse by releasing more microplastics. What I didn't like about this product is the description is really misleading. Lots of buzz words like "eco-friendly, compostable, biodegradable, plastic-free, made from cornstarch, etc." and the whole green plant earth design. It makes you think you can just throw these in the trash and everything will be fine. The good news is they are recyclable with your plastics. It has a plastic #7 symbol on the back. I wish they were more honest about this. I was just throwing these in the trash before I realized what PLA really was.

Okay, so we do a lot of backyard barbecues and potlucks, and I was getting tired of using flimsy plastic cutlery that just ends up breaking or bending. Plus, all that plastic waste was starting to bother me. That's when I found this EarthMix Essential compostable silverware set, and I'm so glad I did!First off, the fact that they're 100% compostable is a huge selling point for me. It makes me feel so much better about using disposable cutlery, knowing it's not going to sit in a landfill forever. But beyond that, they're actually really sturdy! Like, surprisingly so. They're made from some kind of plant-based material, but they feel almost as strong as regular plastic. I haven't had any issues with them breaking or snapping, even with tougher foods. The set comes with 150 pieces, which is a great quantity for the price – 50 forks, 50 spoons, and 50 knives. They look nice too, simple and clean, definitely nicer than your typical disposable cutlery.I've used them for everything from salads to grilled chicken, and they've held up perfectly.Honestly, if you're looking for a convenient and eco-friendly alternative to plastic cutlery, I highly recommend this EarthMix Essential set. They're durable, compostable, and a great value for the price. I'll definitely be buying them again!

Firstly, I just want to get this out of the way...Don't expect something that resembles single use plastic to be easily compostable, reusable, or durable. Reading the other reviews I can see that my expectations were lower than others'. If you're like me, you're just trying to strike a balance of eco-friendly and convenience that you feel good about. You're not looking for something that functions better than plastic, you're just looking for something that you feel better about tossing in the trash after a party. That's why I ordered these; I frequently forget to keep enough utensils around for larger gatherings and inevitably end up purchasing single use plastics. I wanted a backstock of single use utensils that I could feel better about throwing away. I did not want yet another item that is difficult to compost when I have a hard enough time getting my leftover food to turn into mulch, so I definitely won't be putting these in my own compost bin. I won't be reusing them either. I understand a lot of eco-conscious people wash and reuse single use items, but that is dangerous imho as you do not really know what material is leaching out with each wash, and it also doesn't make much sense to me... If you are going to reuse something then it should be a quality item that you can reuse forever. Personally I don't want to own more metal utensils than can reasonably fit in my utensil drawer, and I don't want to store utensils so long that they gather dust and I have to wash them before they can be used by a guest. Mainly I need these for party foods like cake. Out of curiosity I figured I'd test these utensils on a hot pizza fresh out of the oven, and they melted the same way single use plastic would in that situation. I expected that result from a non-metal material that is trying to function like single use plastic. If your expectations are reasonable, then this is a 5 star product that I wholeheartedly recommend.
