Works perfectly IF the very clear instructions are followed EXACTLY. Excellent quality & a bit delicate as MOST photographic equipment IS. Totally satisfied with this item.

I just tried this newfangled thingy and I have to say that I am VERY impressed with it. I was kind of skeptical, but I have purchased other products by JJC and they were good quality, so I gave it a try, and to me, tearing apart a film canister in the pitch black and keeping the film from rolling all over the place is a pain in the butt.Using the Film Retriever is a slightly complex process - requiring the insertion of three leads into the canister and a few steps to get the lead out, but the instructions are well written and the the thing WORKED LIKE A CHARM. The second time you do it, it will take maybe 30 seconds., and I'd much rather spool the film out of the canister than let if flop all over the floor, or surfaces or whatever you have in your darkroom.GOOD PRODUCT!!!

This film retriever tool works great! It's one of the cheaper options on Amazon but features a very solid construction, ambidextrous (symmetrical) design which is quite comfortable to hold and handle, and best of all it works great. The instructions are quite simple and it consists of inserting the tool into the roll, sliding the first slider ("A"), turn the spool till a small click is heard, release your hand from the spool reel, slide the second slider ("B"), pull the whole tool out gently. It took me a few tries to get it right and now it works just about every single attempts. I think what really helped is to release your hand from the spool once you hear the click. And even when you don't get it every time, once you get it, you get it. It might not be a 100% success rate but there is definitely a learning curve.I can easily and highly recommend this tool for anyone wanting to extract 35mm film from its canister--of course, if you prefer to crack it open then you'll need the other style tool, but this one works great and allows you to pre-load your film onto the film sprocket of your developer tank before putting it in your changing bag.ONE NOTE however that I am not so pleased with, is the particular seller on this listing. I received a used, returned product yet was marked as brand new. JJC new has seals on their boxes so it showed, and the way it was jammed back in with the instruction papers all crumpled back was not great either. Thankfully it still works despite not being in the perfect brand-new condition, so I didn't deduct any star rating.

We tried everything to get film end out of a canister - all the tricks we could find online. None of them worked. But this did!

Worked on the first try! Make sure you read the instructions or watching a YT video on how to use it. Great tool!
