I've had this machine for about two months now, and I'm quite pleased with it. I waited a while to put up a review, because I had read some reviewers' comments about poorly made hinges. Well, I've used it every morning for two months now, and the hinges seem to be standing up. (I'll comment again if issues develop.)Anyway, pros (major):1. Compactness. For a 12-cupper, this machine has a small footprint.2. Water well has a sloped top that eliminates splashing.3. Quietness. Sometimes the brew is finished before I even realize it.4. Simplicity of controls. Four buttons. one to program, one to set the hour, one to set the minute, and one to control the brew. This is an excellent feature: it allows you to select "regular," "bold," or "1-4 cups."5. Looks. I don't know if the Museum of Modern art has a coffee maker in its collection, but if they don't, they ought to put this one in.Cons (minor):1. Hard to read clock. While my previous coffeemaker's clock was so bright it served as a night light, this one's on the dim side.2. Fill gauge located back, right, and hard to access. You must move your machine 90 degrees to see it.3. That "bold" feature doesn't work if you set the controls to "1-4 cups."

CURRENT REVIEW: This coffee maker promised so much, but failed so quickly. I wrote the positive review below less than 2 months ago and noted the fragility of the "little clips" on the plastic lid to the glass carafe. Less than 2 months after purchase, the little clips broke off. I had hoped to get several years of service from the product, but now I will look to another manufacturer to help me. I reached out to Hamilton Beach and they essentially said..."We're happy to replace the carafe at no charge if you purchased it within the past 3 months ($4.99 if it's been longer). However, we don't know if the engineers have redesigned this part and you may encounter the problem again. If this is not satisfactory, you may want to contact Amazon." It isn't satisfactory and I did reach out to Amazon. Amazon immediately refunded my money, no questions asked, and asked me to return the item to them and they picked up the postage. That's customer service! Go Amazon!PREVIOUS REVIEW: This coffeemaker makes great coffee, period. And, isn't that what you want a coffeemaker to do? Some thoughts for your consideration.PRO's - 1) Makes great coffee. 2) Has auto shutoff after 2 hours which allows me to rest easy so I don't have to turn around halfway to work in the morning when I think.."uh oh, did I turn off the coffeemaker?" 3) Looks really good sitting on the counter. I call it "Big Red"CON's - 1) Big Red lives up to it's name.....it's BIG! If you are constrained for counter space, you may want to try another. 2) Big Red has a big top that has to be flipped open to pour in the water. You need to make sure you have enough space for the top to clear. 3) Difficult to see the clock because it's not lit up. 4) The water indicator is on the side and in the back, so that's difficult to see also. 5)After you flip up the top, you have to pour the water into a hole in the back. It's a little clunky. 6) To remove the plastic lid from the glass decanter, you have to sort of wiggle it around and pull it so these little clips disengage. The little clips seem fragile, but they haven't broken....yet. We'll see. 7) Auto shutoff isn't adjustable, it's set at 2 hours. 8) Difficult to see the coffee as it goes into the glass decanter so you can't be 100% sure it's done brewing the coffee unless you get up really close (of course, you could wait until it makes those gurgle noises as it runs out of water). So, if all the "con's" could be fixed for an extra $1, would I pay the extra $1?Yes! But if it cost an extra $5 for them to be fixed, would I pay the extra $5? No!! You can't beat this machine for the price, it makes great coffee and all the con's listed are really small. You can't go wrong with this machine.

note: this review is based on our experiences w/ this product for approx 6 mos of daily usage since it was purchased. This coffee maker replaced a rather awful & short-lived KitchenAid coffee maker that leaked water whenever it was used - lots of water that began to become a hazard. This coffee maker initially arrived w/ missing parts, and it was a bit of a hassle getting a replacement from Amazon. Lots of phone calls to someone half way around the world that struggled w/ English, before I was advised to place a duplicate order, but that I had to first package up the original and ship it back to Amazon, and only when they received it, and verified that it was - in fact - missing parts, would they ship the replacement to us, alomg w/ a credit for the first purchase. (in the meantime, we had to drink instant coffee for over a week) When the replacement arrived, that one was also missing a part, but we were able to still use the coffee maker after some fiddling w/ it. . .A couple of cosmetic & design issues:the red color doesn't match the hue, nor the finish, of our other red appliances from KitchenAid, Cusinart, & West Bend which all have a much richer & glossy finish, while Hamilton Beach's red appears 'washed-out', and has a 'flat', rather than even a satin finish. Next to the other red appliances, the Hanilton Beach coffee maker sticks out like an old appliance, but as a stand-alone appliance across the kitchen from the other ones, it's less of an objection. Also, this coffee maker - like most other ones - is rather tall, and the rear- hinged lid that must be raised all the way up to load both coffee grinds & water, dictates that the coffee maker must be slid all the way towards the very front of the countertop so that it doesn't hang up on the overhead cabinets. It's impossible to add either coffee or water while it's under the upper cabinets (but that does facilitate a daily wiping up of a small amount of coffee-stained water that is dripping out of the appliance - no where as much as the one it replaced, but still a pain to deal w/ daily), and raises the issue of just how much of a quality item is this product?Occasionaly, it's necessasry to microwave freshly brewed coffee, as it may be only moderately warm (and never is it 'hot', until it's been on the coffee maker's heated burner for approx 15 minutes or so). .On a positive note, it's simple to clean up the insides, has a well-designed coffee pot, and most importantly, it makes good coffee. If it didn't, I either toss it or donate it. . .

After looking at about 30 different coffee makers, I bought this one sight unseen, solely based on the reviews here at Amazon (I was not able to find this model at any local store) and the fact that all those that I looked at (in person) appeared to be junk. All the five star Amazon reviews paid off and I am overall 100% happy with this coffee maker. I never had a timer before and thought this was something I would not use but, to my surprise, I love it. Also the 2-hour shut off is a super nice feature. The price is right. And lastly, it makes great coffee (after about the fourth pot - and I started grinding the coffee a little finer...I drink very strong coffee). This replaces a simple "on-off" Braun (which made the best coffee ever) that I had for 12 years. I was not able to find another Braun that I liked even though there are several available here.A few minor oddities that may make the rating more like a 4+ or 5-1) The grounds basket does not sit flat on the countertop. I found that a little odd when filling it with grounds - a tiny sliver of plastic designed into the bottom of the basket would have alleviated this oddity.2) Second, the inside of the coffee maker's lid seems to gather, and hold, an excessive amount of condensation after brewing, which was still there the next day. If you live in a super humid climate, this may be an issue. There is a plastic guide on the inside of the lid that directs the condensation back into the water reservoir, but it only works so-so. The carafe also held a moderate amount of condensation after washing and placing back on the hot plate.3) When removing/replacing the grounds basket and/or pouring in the water, you must swivel the water spray nozzle back and forth. No big deal, I've just never seen/noticed this before.4) The no-drip carafe works great - it is a tiny bit difficult for me to get the last half ounce or so of water out of the carafe while pouring it into the coffee maker.5) It only comes in red. However, during the period 1/1/06 to 2/28/07, a portion of each sale was donated by Hamilton Beach to the American Heart Association Go Red for Women campaign.PS: Replacement Carafe. I knew it would be a matter of time before I broke the carafe on this and wondered how hard it would be to find a replacement (it happened 12/2008). It turned out I couldn't find the exact replacement and they appear to be discontinued. BUT, the Cuisinart DCC-1200PRC works perfectly fine, even though nobody will tell you that and it doesn't come in red. I "eyeballed" it and thought it would work so I tried it. It is a teeny tiny bit smaller than the original carafe and works perfectly.
