If you use the Sterilite 7 quart, these will fit into a "shoebox" gift, and that's how I use them. There will be just enough room left for a few additions...soap, toothbrush, crayons, a small coloring book, a nativity scene, socks...items such as those. I think it's a nice gift for a young child (say 3-7 years) that requires no batteries etc. and that can be enjoyed for quite some time. I have found them to be reasonably sturdy. Yes, the wheels turn; yes the "trailer hitch" does actually work (I'm surprised when I find toys with a trailer hitch that doesn't fit the trailer, but they exist). No, the steering wheel is not actually for steering, but I don't think that matters much.
