Short Version: This is a very good jump rope--go ahead and buy one (or two... see below).Long Version: I have tried a lot of different ropes--from basic ones with no ball-bearings (e.g. ones similar to the simple one Floyd Mayweather uses) to various wire-cable speed ropes (used by Olympic-level jump rope athletes, and insanely-fit CrossFit enthusiasts)--and this rope is my overall favorite. As a mere mortal, this rope suits my purposes well. I generally do a cumulative 10-minute jump rope workout, doing as many double-unders (DU) as I can. Out of all the different ropes I've used, this rope has the right mass for doing DUs. For me, the wire speed ropes are too light so I don't get the momentum I need. I am of average athletic ability so I can't do a lot of consecutive DUs (which, if you're up to that, a wire rope might be better for). I have to take a few single skips between each DU, so I find the weight of this rope good for that style. I imagine you could learn to do DUs with this rope then try a faster wire rope (find what works for you). This rope is not cheap, but it is worth it (and on sale it's definitely worth it!)Pluses: good bearings; smooth rotation; good plastic cable (not too thin, not too thick, supple enough that kinks from storage easily work themselves out); the light-weight metal handles are a nice length (not too short). Thus, by positioning your grip on the handles, while you are jumping, you can make micro-adjustments in the overall length (this is good, because things change from day to day depending on your muscle tension, the temperature etc.; and how you want to position the rope changes as you get warmed up); the little screw-mechanism to adjust the cable length is very easy to use and secure (you can check it now and then after prolonged use to make sure it's tight--but this is not really an issue). The rope is durable. I've been using mine for a couple of years, dropped it many times and it still works like new. I actually bought two of these ropes, as the cable is permanently fixed to one of the handles and the adjustment/securing screw is on the other. I wanted perfect symmetry (which I think affects the smoothness of the rotation a bit). So I took my first rope and cut the cable off the non-screw handle where the cable is permanently attached. Then, using the second jump rope unit, I made a customized rope where both handles now have the adjusting screw. This is not necessary, but, in my opinion, it makes an even better jump rope (so buy two on sale!). From the second rope I have an extra cable for when the first cable (eventually) wears out.Since I jump on a 3/4"-thick rubber horse stall mat (in my garage, or on my driveway), it will be years before the cable wears out. I recommend getting such a mat (about $40 at a farm supply store for a 4'X6' mat--if this is more than you need there are other options). You can get the thinner, softer, foam jigsaw-fitting pieces. These work too, but aren't as good or as durable. The harder rubber mat gives you some cushion (you'll want this if you plan on jumping for years to come) without being too spongy (which can mess up your jumps). If you don't have a mat, and you jump on a concrete surface that isn't totally smooth, the cable will wear out much faster (and very fast with a coated-wire speed rope--you'll soon see sparks!).One other thing that's nice about this rope is that the cable is heavy enough that it's not as easily affected by wind. If you jump outside, wind can be a problem with lighter wire cables.Aesthetics: I think the grip coating--with little holes that create a polka-dot appearance--look dorky. So I wrapped my handles in black hockey tape--much more cool!Summary: great rope; buy two (and a rubber mat to jump on)! Don't be discouraged if it takes you awhile (like even a year...) to get DUs, but ultimately DU are the way to go--you can get a serious workout in a short time (HIT).Jumping rope is more fun, and a better overall body workout, than jogging/running/grinding away on an elliptical (every American basement has one of these... collecting dust). Pretend you're a boxer training for the title match! Where else in adult life do you get the chance to "skip?" For inspiration, watch You Tube videos of amazing rope skillz (treadmill videos, not so much...)Q: Is this jump rope really worth 30-something bucks (is it worth it to get healthy and feel good...)?A: **** YES!
