DMT Diamond Coverage Comparison

The DMT Difference

Diamond Uniformity, Coverage, Surface Flatness

Uniformity: DMT is the only manufacturer of diamond sharpeners that uses micronized monocrystalline diamonds, precisely sized for a more uniform diamond surface.

Coverage: DMT’s process assures the most diamonds per square inch in the industry providing a more durable sharpening surface.

Surface Flatness: DMT bench stones are engineered precision flat, assuring even contact with the knife or tool during the sharpening process.

Choice of Diamond Surfaces

Interrupted or polka dot surface for which DMT is famous has slightly recessed holes that will collect metal fines (swarf) removed during sharpening to prevent loading. Fast sharpening action; not recommended for pointed or very small tools.

Continuous surface presents a more conventional looking sharpening surface. Fast sharpening action; able to use on small surface edges.

HardCoat, DMT’s newest proprietary surface, is able to withstand the rigors of ceramic sharpening, providing an even longer service life to the sharpener.

DMT Commitment

DMT is committed to providing the best diamond sharpeners in the marketplace. If the sharpener is found to be defective, it will be replaced.

Benefits of The DMT Difference

  • Precise Diamond Sizing for Consistent Sharpening and Longer Life
  • Best Diamond Coverage for Longer-Lasting Service
  • Flat Surface for Even Sharpening
  • DMT Commitment- Replacement If Found To Be Defective

If you are unsure about sharpening, try one of DMT’s sharpening systems to assist with proper sharpening angles. The blade guide can also be used with DMT’s bench stones.

Care and Use of DMT Diamond Sharpeners

All models are designed to be used dry or with water so there are no messy oils and extensive clean up to worry about. Always clean the DMT sharpening surface after sharpening. Rinse surface with water and wipe dry. After several sharpenings, clean more thoroughly with a mild abrasive and brush; rinse surface with water and wipe dry.

Always put away dry and store in a dry environment. Use leafing (paper towels, cloth, plastic storage bag) in between your bench stones to prevent abrasive sides from rubbing

About Sharpening with DMT

Get the Most out of your DMT Sharpener

There is a ‘break-in’ period for your diamond stone. Initially, it will feel especially rough but will smooth over time without impacting performance. Let the diamonds do the work; just light strokes with the edge to sharpen, same number of strokes each side. Approximately 5 or 6 strokes per side (depending upon condition of edge) compared to 30 strokes per side on a conventional stone, saving time and extending the life of the knife or tool. Start with a coarser grit for damaged or dull edges and work to finer grits. The work the edge is to do will help you determine the grit needed: Rough work, end with coarse grit (cutting cardboard); finer work, work through finer grits (food preparation).

  • Initial break-in
  • Light strokes to sharpen – let the diamond do the work
  • Faster than conventional sharpening methods
  • Rough work – coarser grit
  • Fine work – finer grit

This little mobile sharpener is superb. I use this all the time (even over my larger stones) and it works like a charm. Do you really need the extra, extra fine? Probably not, but I purchased both in any case...and use the extra, extra fine (along with a strop) just to polish up the edges on my knives. The results exceed anything the average woodsman could demand.

You know, I did quite a bit of research before I purchased this little dandy. I read the reviews of all the stones, the various diamond sharpeners, the whole bit. Additionally, I looked into the "guides" and anything else to simplify the sharpening process. By no means am I a knife/survive in the wild/kill a tiger just by looking at it kind of guy. However, this sharpener was easy, fast, and efficient. If you have questions about appropriate technique, look up a youtube video or check on the dmt website--easy as cake, and a blade as sharp as you could need. I purchased the coarse/fine one (red & blue), but I figure I'll pick up the extra fine some time down the road. Now, for the breakdown:Pros:1) Compact--the sharpener folds into the handles (which you already know, by now)and it's double sided.2) Effective--a gently, consistent motion gets you blade just where you need it. The instructions with this sharpener state that it should only be used for camping/hunting knives, etc., but I took the kitchen knives to task. A couple of them were so dull that I could run them across my finger with no consequences. Now, I don't dare. The knives cut through paper and cut tomatoes (and other veggie sundries) with ease. Just maintain a consistent angle and motion, and you should be fine. Not rocket science.3) Efficient--My kitchen knives took a bit longer (for the reason, see #2), but everything that had a reasonable edge took less than 2-3 minutes. If your knives are real garbage you may want to start with the extra coarse, but I'm too cheap right now. Time was a factor, and this beauty delivered.Cons:1) On the coarse side, the diamond coating was missing along one small section of the edge. I know, I know, it really doesn't matter in the least, but I'm just kind of particular like that. That's it. Ecstatic about my purchase, will never look for another sharpener! Good luck!

It's really a great kitchen necessary tool, which can make a knife like a Japanese ninja sword.
