The build appears decent enough, but in practice the stem is a bit jumpy. I find positioning it very fussy in order to get a fairly accurate runout reading. It’s precise enough for my woodworking tools needs, though.

I was impressed by the quality of this dial indicator for the price of $28. The indicator is accurate, well-constructed, and even comes with a nice carrying case for storage. It's a nice addition considering the cost. I have been using it consistently and find it to be excellent. Keep in mind you will need a holder for it, depending on your use. Overall, for a dial indicator with one-thousandth increments, it's a solid purchase for $28. Five stars.

This was not accurate down to 1/1000th of an inch, maybe 3/1000ths. It's workable if you need to get close, but if you're needing precision then I wouldn't use this dial. The reason isn't because it CAN'T be made to work down to 1/1000th, but because the dial is one of the tools by which you calibrate your machines and get to know the "slop" in your machine- so you REALLY want it to be accurate as possible. It would be worth it, in my opinion, to get a more accurate one assembled with the holder.

The most important thing about a gage like this is repeatability. Testing with gage blocks, it was both repeatable and accurate to .0005", which was the limit of my testing. It returns to zero perfectly and consistently. Operation is very smooth, another important feature, as you don't want your readings to jump suddenly. The nice finish reminds me of the old Chicago Dial Indicator units, which were rugged and chemical resistant, though sometimes were a little slippery in a collet. One of the best features of this is that they're individually tested, and the box includes a graph of the actual measured accuracy at various points, so you can use it with confidence, and adjust for any critical readings. The tip is standard and you can use any threaded replacement if the included tip doesn't suit you.
