That said, I would think it would be difficult to clear your sinuses from a placebo effect.) In fact, it was already starting to turn slightly brownish after one week of use. (Note - I would expect other locations to last much longer as Austin has severe airborne allergens).SETUPSuper simple setup. Unbox. Remove plastic from filters. Plug in. Turn on.NOTE - you must open the front cover and remove the plastic around the filters before using. It does say this in the instructions, but who reads instructions. If you just plug it in and turn it on, the filters will not work encased in plastic (obviously).QUIETThere are 3 fan speed settings. The lowest is barely audible even in a quiet room. You will likely not hear it at all. The middle speed moves more air and you can have it in the room, have normal conversations and forget it's there... but you can definitely hear it. The highest speed is louder than you might want continuously if you are in the room but it moves a lot of air. In all cases, the noise it makes it a very pleasant white noise that you tend to tune out (and I am very sensitive to noise). It is completely atonal.REMOVES SMELLSThe unit has a color-coded light on the top. Blue for clean air, Red for when it senses particles... pink & purple hues for in-between states. I was dubious of this, thinking it might be a bit gimmicky... until it I saw the light go from blue to red shortly after my wife started grilling onions in the adjacent kitchen. I also noted that it went back to blue when the onion smell was gone from the room. That's a testament to the carbon filter I suppose. On a lighter note, my son farted within 5 feet from the unit. The light turned red within 5 seconds. We had a good laugh.One more comment about smells... I read other reviews that mentioned an industrial plastic/packaging smell. As with any plastic product, it initially had a slightly plastic order out of the box. This dissipated within 30 minutes or less. I wonder if they perhaps did not remove the plastic casing around the filters... and just turned it on straight out of the box???So far, I am very pleased with this purchase. Without it on, my eyes itch and water and my nose is stopped up. With it, I am nearly symptom free from allergies inside the house. If my opinion changes, I'll post an update.
