When you receive the struts, they come with a steel bar holding each one compressed with zip ties holding the bar in place...see photo. To safely open the struts I held the strut compressed against the wall while my wife cut the zip ties and pulled the bar loose with pliers. Be ready because they are under a lot of tension.I got these for our 2002 Chevy Tahoe. The struts worked fine all winter long but started sagging in the summer heat.That little screwdriver they include is used to pry and move those little bands top and bottom on the struts. I was pleasantly surprised that the first strut held the glass up all by itself when I removed the other strut. Don't try and force anything...take your time. By the way, the pair of these costs about $25. I spent more than that on just one strut for my sports car. Always replace both struts at the same time.

These do not have anywhere near the lifespan of an OEM product... while they are still functioning, they are starting to squeak and make a slight sputtering sound as they extend which is an obvious sign of what is soon to come. The tailgate is used about twice a week, if that- so to be failing around 90 days is unacceptable. Cost savings becomes null at this point.
