This is one big 1/2" router bit with a 2 1/2" cutting length. I needed this to cut a slot length-wise into a rectangular, mahogany (sapele) blank prior to turning it on a lathe for making wheel supports for a spinning wheel. It is the easiest and safest way to cut a slot into a (future) rounded post. I used this in my Rockler router table with a Porter Cable router. With the router cranked to its lowest position, the bit still protruded about 1/8". After testing the bit on some scrap, I set starting and stopping points on the table for the slot and using gradual height increases of 3/8" per cut, I safely achieved the desired results. Then I was able to turn the piece in the lathe without problems. (Prior to using this technique, I tried cutting the slots after turning the wheel supports using a table saw [really dangerous] or band saw [hopelessly inaccurate]. Both resulted in less than acceptable appearances.)Again, go slowly, at most 1/4 to 3/8" increments at a time. If you attempt to use the entire cutting surface in a single slice, the resulting disaster will be your own fault.

Good cutter. It worked well for the deep mortising with a router I needed to do. Held up well, though I will have to have it resharpened at this point. Mind you, I used this cutter to plunge through all sorts of different hardwood species. Anything from Desert Ironwood (extremely hard, dense, blunts cutters) Walnut, Hard Maple, Paduk, Box Elder Burl, Big Leaf Maple Burl, Quilted Maple, etc, etc. Name the species of wood except for Ipe and I've probably cut it with the same cutter over x amount of months. When I would prep blanks I was literally loading a jig with the blank and plunge boring (Fast, about 10 seconds per cut or less depending on the wood density- ironwood, slower of course) and it cut. Eventually it began to cut with burn and I replaced it with the same size Bosch cutter. I still have it, no chips in the carbide. for the amount of work this bit did for $28 or so at the time I bought it, it paid for itself a-thousand-fold.
