Setup was straightforward. (I have at least a moderate amount of computer and networking experience.) This unit is working flawlessly and quietly. Some reviewers have commented about noise on these. However, mine seems nearly silent.

Update: 22 months later (3/16/22). The BUFFALO TeraStation 3410DN has performed extremely well. Have used iSCSI, mapped drives, backup target, and all my data repository. Performance is great with RAID5...still averaging 80-100MB/s even at 80% full. I bought an extra hard drive just in case one failed, but nothing has failed to date. Great device overall.-------------------Purchased the BUFFALO TeraStation 3410DN Desktop 12 TB NAS, setup with Raid5.I've been waiting a while for prices to come down and I was not disappointed in a week of slamming the TeraStation. The setup was easy. Plugged in and turned on, discovered the NAS with DHCP, then set static IP address, and updated firmware. The firmware took about 20 mins and I started thinking that it was not going to work like one of the reviews, but it finished, just took longer than I thought.Came with WD Red NAS drives, not the green drives.Comes with iSCSI capabilities, which is great for my Win10 PC, so I can use it as a backup drive (without NAS mapping), plus I will do some testing with other Server VMs that iSCSI drives will be needed, SQL server, for example. There is a review on running out of space, so I set the alarm to email me when the space is less than 10%.I have transferred 4.5TBs in a few days of periodically loading up my old portable USB drives, and the transfer rate has been good. It is not slow. Depending upon if there are a lot of small files, then I see 1-20MB/s, when the files are larger, I see 30-70MB/s, and have seen a peak of 100-110MB/s. Overall good as expected on a gigabit ethernet. If you have a fancy home switch that supports link aggregation, then you can team (port trunking) both 1gbe ethernet links into a 2gbe link. Sadly, I don't have that kind of a switch at home, but the 1gbe is still very good overall.I've also setup the TeraStation to backup my DropBox and OneDrive data through the TeraStation cloud storage feature built in, and it is working well. Not everything is perfect though, the remote management app for an android (not sure about the iphone app), needs a bit of work. It's ok at best, but it does work once you figure out the two different apps required.Overall, if you are looking at reviews for this product, I have a background in IT, and IMHO this home NAS is worth the purchase.

I lost over a TB of data while having a tech support person for this company walk me through a firmware update. The update failed and all four drives were corrupted. I spent over 12 hours on the phone with tech support over the next couple weeks wiping and formatting the drives, building the arrays and reinstalling the firmware. I decided to update the firmware before adding all my data back to the NAS, and the same thing happened again. All drives corrupted. What a total waste of time. I had downloaded a new firmware update and was connected directly to the NAS from my computer through Ethernet. Not going through network to make sure there were no issues with connectivity. Buffalo tech support refuses to honor the warranty which it is still under. They won't replace the unit, which I think has a network card issue. They won't replace any of the drives since they could be formatted, even though there were errors when I checked them after formatting. Stay away from Buffalo Tera Stations. They are cheap and not worth the money or time and they don't honor their warranty.

I have been using the TeraStation 3210DN for almost a year now and have been very happy with it. There was some annoyance about the original setup where I had to “format” the drive, but once I got past it, it’s been working like a charm.I was also pleasantly surprised that the TeraStation has built-in synchronization with Dropbox. Simply enter your Dropbox credentials, specify which folder on TeraStation needs to be synced with which folder on Dropbox, and voila: your files are now accessible in the cloud without (a big deal for us) having to open up your in-office network for outside world access.

I have set up several different NAS in my time, and this was by far the easiest. Price point was spot-on and convenience of having drives already installed and formatted was excellent. This little guy makes less noise than my Cisco switch - and I was making backups and mapping shares to the network files within an hour. Note to others: I kept receiving security credential error when attempting to map drive in windows. After beating my head into the wall - finally found that problem was because user had PIN log on. Once we logged on with full password, issue was gone. That's a Microsoft issue - not NAS. Great product. Highly recommend.
