Works well, only reason I dropped from 5 star is it's slow vs. my old comparable pump.

Tried to pump out basement, had 14" of dirty water but float switch would not run it unless held about 20" above the floor & out of water. Very disappointing as there was not anything handy to tie it up to, and auto shot off would not have worked either. So it is only useful in a 2 foot deep sump pit. Hence the 3 star rating.Nice & quiet but the float switch was useless. All it was good for was confirming the sewer was plugged too. That is not the pumps fault. This is the only house in this subdiv with a basement built by a guy who should have been sued 60 years ago for shoddy practice.

Durable and good unit. Pumps fast. Have used it only twice but works as well as more well known brands

I bought the 1 HP stainless steel pump, which is billed as a "utility pump" on amazon. The amazon page says "Electric water pump for pool draining, flooded basements, hot tubs, etc." This pump would probably work fine for pool and hot tub draining, or as a backup sump pump. But I was hoping to use this to pump out standing water in my back yard or basement floor, and it does not appear to be suitable for that. If I hadn't already used this pump out of doors before determining that it doesn't work for my application, I would return it.You have to "prime" the pump by submerging it on its side.I did something similar by pouring water into the outlet before attaching the hose. The problem is that a) if you shut off the pump and move it, a good bit of water comes out the bottom. Not what you want if you're trying to dry the basement floor. b) You have to prime the pump every time you start it. c) the "carry handle" is not securely bolted to the unit, and it's not comfortable to hold. The amazon page talks about "automatic" and "manual" modes, which is a bit confusing. The pump is controlled by a float switch. If the float switch is held at a higher level than the pump, either by elevated water level or in the user's hand, the pump turns on. If the float switch falls down near the base of the pump, the pump shuts off. There is a bracket on the side of the pump which is supposed to fix the float switch up or down, but the thumb screw is cheap junk and I would not rely upon it.The printed user's guide that ships with the pump is useless. It appears to have been written in another language and translated to English by a very bad translation program. The documentation on the amazon page is far more useful.
