This looked like a great idea but it just does not work well.

This is perfect. It does exactly what it says it does. The clips are spring loaded (although maybe not with actual springs, I didn't check) and hold onto the battery by themselves. Baofeng does a good job with their chargers of not faking you into thinking your batteries are dead and buying new ones, but not all companies are like that. Using this charger I was able to revive "dead" portable radio batteries from Icom, Connect Systems and even the stupid expensive Motorola Impres batteries. A lot of manufacturers will trick you into thinking your batteries are dead and buying new batteries simply by refusing to recharge a battery who's voltage has dropped below a certain threshold. Instead of charging the battery, the charger gives you a "bad battery" indication, but not with Baofeng. Just make sure you know the polarity of the ports on the battery and correctly match up the positive and negative. It's possible this charger may have some type of short circuit protection, but I didn't test it. Only one battery that was "dead" was not able to be revived and through testing I determined that it did actually have 1 bad cell in it. For the others, anywhere from 10-60 minutes on the Baofeng charger and I was then able to drop the battery back in the factory charger and instead of the "bad battery" indicator it went right to charge (or condition in the case of the one Impres battery, then charge). This does exactly what it says and is well worth the money! And, yes, you can also use it just to charge on the go anywhere you have a USB plug! Definitely recommend!!!
